Actually finishing a run
This is mostly a question out of curiosity :)

... How many of the games you start do you actually finish?
And I'm not talking about the terrible starts where you decide to just rewind because you didn't find a single coconut with the mermaid. But runs where you are deep in but just .. start a new one at some point instead of finishing the old one first.

I've started thinking about this because I took a critical look at my save files today - after realizing that my motivation to load my current mermaid run has declined and I was much more excited to try again/something new.
It's not like the run is going badly. On the contrary, I hurl around my baby in a basket and happily slay hounds. But I doubt that I'll find the motivation to gain the x% of body fat I need to return to the depth. I'm confident I'd be able to handle whatever issue arises. If I don't go hunting boars with 2 open lizard bites, I'm not going to die. But the challenge of starting again and maybe trying something new is soooo tempting.

I had hoped the mermaid getting an achievement would entice me. Silly me. I am cursed to basically never finish a game.
What about you?

I feel like once you get to the point that you feel like you cannot possibly lose it is more fun to just start a new run because most games are most challenging and most fun right at the start all the way up and until you solve all the struggles and get nice and comfy.

That being said I am putting everything i do on youtube so i finish most my runs because I feel like if I got people invested into the series it is cool to give them some kind of closure.

This was easy with things like Hunter and Farmer which are relativly interesting all the way to the end, the Mermaid will be a bit tougher I feel pretty much the same as you do.

I still did not have the baby so I am excited about that at least.. i hope that with some good gameplay I will not be to far of 100% by the time i get there.

But yea.. i feel ya bro :D. This game could use a bit more drama in the late game.. however that is very hard to achieve without making game way to frustrating. I think it is better like it is right now.

Nothing bad in scraping a run and starting a new one once it gets stale..

I have so many things I still want to try as well..

Killer Drones..
The Alien Fruit..
Combinations of all kinds of weird stuff...

So much to do so litle time to do it.

So i perfectly understand the lure of abandoning the current run that is basically "done" and starting a new one, 100% :D.

Cheers!

Same, I lose motivation at the point it becomes a guaranteed win.
I finished the mermaid run at sea by having ~20 fats and consuming them one after the other to hit the weight gain. I'd prefer the entire game be a struggle until the very end. As long as you have varying difficulties everyone can be happy.

I started 3 times and ended them somewhere on half of the game, mainly because I enjoyed them and decided to restart as usual happy-rpg-restart-trigger. I was waiting for optimization update but now that we know (yesterday news) that it is at least 1.5 months more I am considering finishing before it. Optimization is bad but not that bad.

My main criticism of the game is that map is not random, which is basically "I want more of this game". It would be so cool if this game would be at least semi-rouguelike, now it is more as classic static-map open-world. This would mean a lot of fresh runs, this would be a dream.

Before Achievements? Rarely. Now I'm just aiming for finishes for the achievements.

after playing the hunter and doing everything (basically all the farming stuff too), i played the farmer and after the initial difficulties, it got to be very easy while i was just trying to find a goat, which took a surprisingly long time even though i had a bunch of pit traps in both highlands and grasslands. the game became pretty tedious and i almost quit and moved on to a completely different game, but now i am realizing i just needed to switch to a new run in this game sooner - i am now trying the tourist (man this is hard!) and it is a ton of fun again.

This happens to me a lot!

I think it is a mix of looking for something more challenging, the daily chores (go check the traps, go check the animals) and impatience to test / play something else.

Before the storms destroying the fish traps, clicking on each trap was a giant shore and really slowed down the mid-late days.

I am taking a break until the optimization patch and hopefully a improvement to fish traps against the storms.

I initially didn't like the change of fish traps being destroyed to storms. I think it's a good nerf, fish traps were overpowered, they have no reset timer, easy to make, no bait required, you get their benefit in a day from making them.

Now you have to make them pre-storm to help get your trap skill up, pull them out during storm, put them back during dry season to get up to log trapping and start maxxing trapping out, then don't care about them because the next storm you'll probably finish the game.

I'm taking a break too until there are more perks that make mid/late game more difficult and worth playing. I'm not a fan of achievements unless they are really challenging and not just something that's just time consuming or out of the way to do.

i agree i like the storm killing fish trap and it seems realistic too. storm season is already maybe too easy, although i'm not sure how much wetness makes it more likely to catch fever though. if i have no dirt, wounds, or bug bites, can i still get fever? and does being wet/soaked increase that chance? or just make the fever worse?

I didn't even finish the first run. Just got to the part when I need different mind state to get the last decision. I don't know what this means and how long time it takes. So this is not motivating to me. I kind of hope there was a clearer goal to work towards at this point.

I just don't feel like grinding up the wood working skill until I might get the raft. Wood working skill could go up faster. I'm not gonna use time to cut down trees or craft statues just for that. Might sound negative but I really liked the game to this point.

I think I will still play this game but need to give it a break. Takes so much time.

Wet/soaked can make you cold and if you get cold enough you'll see hypothermia shows bacteria as an effect. I think that's the only one your missing from your list.

Wetness reduces fever, fever is just a symptom, you have to treat the underlying cause which is a stat that is hidden. (camp fever, ect.)

In case you want an answer for when you get back to it: You play a drum to get different mind state. If you take the longer play times, it goes faster. So, filling that requirement is very out of game.

Altered mind state seems to go up only very slightly if I play drums night time. Day time arrow points down. I don't see how I can get it up this way. My percussion level is topped now tho. Maybe I stop sleeping and play drum in cave daytime if that helps. I try getting drunk first. If I stop cleaning my home, get bitten by shark and eat so many coconuts I get diarrhea, I will be able to get some mental problems.

Update. Got the mental state change. I don't know why it worked now with just one 3 hour session. Only thing I did different, was that I used regular drum instead of snake drum that I used before. Had few ruff days too and it was stormy night.
