Best place to set up your camp?
I am on my 10th play-through and so far each time I have established my camp on the starting Bay area. But is there a better place to park all of your crap and bed and chests and stuff? The Beach seems like it would be too hot. The jungle seems like it would be to full of bugs. Is The Bay where it's at, or am I missing a golden area that would be better to set up shop?

Spoilers:

The beach and the bay have a lower temperature than other places, still, they are prone to storms which can be very dangerous if unprepared.

I am assuming you are playing with the hunter as you are starting in the bay.

The jungle may be full of bugs, but once you build something to live (Shed, hut, cellar) it is an excellent place thanks to where it is placed, you'll be 1 turn from many important areas (Sea in the Bay, Mud in the Wetlands, trapping place for goats and lizards in the Grasslands).

The bay can be a good temporary place to stay at, but try to move somewhere else by the 30th.

Depends on your perks. If you have the bug resistant perk, the starting amount of bugs in the jungle wont bother you, it's also far enough inland to not be affected by storms and connects to the bay, wetlands, and grasslands. All beach areas are cooler than what you can find inland and usually, even cooler than a mudhut or cellar, but all your stuff will be blown away by storms and during said storms, you'll get the time-wasting take shelter event if you leave your shelter at all.

A lot of people will say the secret valley is also a good pick, however, it's blazing hot there all the time and it's far away from water, making it a very difficult place to stay despite the crop buff. It's really only good for growing rice.

I would make a case for the Jungle highlands myself if you have a very high climbing skill, with the renewable mango trees, the access to the secret cove, the bat and macaque caves, the rocks everywhere for advanced buildings, it's two screens away from the wetlands and you can climb directly from the wetlands up to the location for quick water transport. It is very hot there though and you'll be running into a lot of macaques, but at least that area is safe from moniter lizards and snakes. I think it's a good spot for trapping since it has trapping locations for boars, goats, and partriges just one screen away, and the dark cave in the wetlands has infinite bird feed in the form of grubs. Just make sure to carry a splint with you at all times and a few ash dressings just in case.

No matter where you decide to set up camp though, make sure it's somewhat close to bathing water since overheating is a real problem in dry season. Preferably you'll also want to be close to snake grass, I always end up using a lot of it in my runs and tailoring is always the first skill I max without even trying.

Also, don't make your base in the wetlands, the bugs will eat you alive and you'll have a fire going non-stop burning through your snakegrass and wood while you overheat and suck the puddles dry of liquid within 2 days.

From talking to people most consider the Jungle (between wetlands and bay ) a best base location and it is very hard to disagree.

Not as many bugs as wetlands
Safe from storms
Close to bay and ocean.

In general Bay + Jungle + Wetlands have most of the resources you will ever need so any of these 3 is a good base location in my opinon each coming with their own positives and negatives.

With bay having storms and wetlands having way more bugs then jungle, Jungle is probably best place for newer people. If you struggle with bugs Bay might be the best though.

Personally I have built a base in wetlands way more often than in Jungle because I like to plant bunch of crops there and keep an eye out on them but if you are still learning the game I would advise the Jungle as well.

Bay is fine if you do not mind the storms and build a mudhut on time to keep your things safe from it.

So no you are not missing out on anything your choice is pretty good.

beach is not as good because it is further away from wetlands and wetlands is an important source of water and mud and best place to plant "wet" plants.

Good luck!

Personally I like the Jungle Outskirts, because it's only 3 minutes from the beach even without paths (meaning easy access to seawater for washing yourself to cool off and refilling food-storage coolers), fairly close to the Rocks for good fishing, low on bugs, and still not too far from the Wetlands. But it is an exposed location and is affected by storms.

Wetlands have a humid growth buff for Jungle crops and reduced penalty to Arid ones, Dark cave water source with farmable insects and later a refilling pond (but you need to reach this from collapsed tunnel route), Well infastracture. Very hard to get dehydrated with planning for Dry Season (Reservoirs and clay pots or glazed vases)

It is basically Wetlands or Secret Valley for me depending on investment.

Bugs? Cover yourself in mud to lower heat and damage, add oil to water sources if you have plenty, or make bug repellent from Aloe Vera Gel and grinded snake grass. It's not like you will be staying outside all the time. (And you need to farm Aloe Vera anyways for wounds etc healing, gather two leaves, use one leaf twice store in container then use other leaf twice, both leaves will be at 11-10% make Gel or plant them in a ready crop plot with like 50-60% water.

Edit 1: Also it's pretty much an in between location Wetlands to Jungle to Grass lands to Mangrove or Wetlands to Secret Valley, Wetlands to Jungle Highlands to Volcano. If you ask me a it's very convenient place to compared to others, bugs isn't really a problem anyway once you know how to manage.

Wetlands (Reliable Base), Secret Valley (super farming), Mangroves (Fishing outpost) my top choices and outpost.

I like jungle. Easy access to most places, infinite wood resource, no danger animals and wont affect by storm.

If I'm remembering it right, jungle also count as humid, so plants like humid environment have same grow speed as in wetland.

I'm playing with tourist now, and I am considering set my base at the Bay because of the bugs. In the case of hunter, I think the Jungle should be OK (but I still prefer the Bay).

Bugs aren’t that big of an issue, the biggest problem with them is that they cause illness, but as the hunter, you are immune to any disease and once you go through with it you can never catch it again.

I prefer the Western Grasslands as a permanent base. It feels more centrally located, and there's the Monitor cave as a basic shelter or storage. But the Jungle is probably a better choice.

I am having better luck in the jungle than I did in the bay. But I also recently discovered a small cave at the end of the "rocks" location. It seems super safe and secluded, but also kind of far from everything. It has 3 tidepools nearby, though - so an excellent source of food. I may try my next attempt there.
