Any tips for dealing with depression/mood?
After a few attempts, I got to the point where basic survival is handled; I'm not dying of thirst or hunger any more. But right as I got my mud hut set up, storms started hitting and my guy started getting super depressed - and everything taking twice as long just compounded the issue. I'm on day 47, barely able to maintain my hunger any more, storms happen every other day, and I'm not sure how to handle it. I try diving, making sand castles, but every time I start getting even slightly out of the "depressed" zone, I have a nightmare or see something staring at me in the dark and BAM, right back down to zero mood.

You seems to being hunted by the Watcher
In order to avoid you being watched, you need to sleep with lights and avoid dark areas, so I suggest sleeping and bringing candles everywhere you go
Also the Watcher can be defeated as long as you have high enough mental structure, just keep staring at it and you'll defeat it in a few turn or so
Lastly, try to raise your mud hut comfort by making wooden carving or furniture such as chair or table. Hell, even make a potted flower to increase the comfort slightly, albeit temporarily. They'll help you get out of your character depressed state quicker.

Dang, didn't get candles until after this whole thing started. He actually confronted me a couple days after this, I fended him off with a spear but he'll "be back". Sounds like I made bad time overall, all these blueprints are ones I didn't get until after my mental state was shot. I'm not dead yet though, so we'll see how this run goes.

Alright, got my mood back up overall, and managed to kill the hunter in a confrontation. Is the watcher separate from him?

Apparently the watcher is different. Trying to get my mental state high enough to defeat it, but after holding its stare a few times I just scream each time anyways.

Follow-up: advanced tips for dealing with dehydration? I made it to day 72. Killed the hunter, fought off the watcher, was doing great. Then I get hit with a fifteen-day drought. All the puddles in the wetlands dried up, water in the cave dried up, reservoir dried up. Subsisted on cave water and coconut milk until diarrhea from the latter caused death by dehydration. I'm honestly not sure what else I could've done here.

Cut banana trees and put a container in the trunk to collect a little bit of water. Build an alembic so you can distill seawater. Keep some seawater at your home so you can cool off frequently to reduce water loss from being hot. But really, your best bet is to build more than one reservoir before the dry season hits.

A lot you could do.
The easiest way was mentioned by Philtre already. If you cut down empty banana trees and collect the water, it'll give you about 8 portions of drinkable water. You could also make an alembic to turn seawater into drinkable water. Lastly, you could build a well in the wetlands, it's basically unlimited water supply like the cave water.

Dang, did not know any of those. Will prioritize getting that going, was a shame to die at that point; food was basically a non-issue, thought I was in the clear
Fruit and shellfish give some hydration when eaten as well, which can help stretch you along a little further.

I very much recommend working to get a lot of containers and water storage set up before the drought hits, it helps to have a backup of stuff stored.

Well that went well for a while. Made it to day 80 this time. Was fine on food and water both. Then one day it was just so hot that I died. Mud hut with the cooling temp upgrade, and no matter what I did, my body temp just kept going up. Go for a dive? No help. Wash myself? Nada. Just do nothing but rest in the hut? Have fun dying .

Weird. It's normal for dry season to get uncomfortably hot, but not to the extent that you die while in a sheltered location. Did you have a fire on in your hut? Were you wearing armor, a lot of clothing, or unusual clothing (in particular, some of the unique clothing you can get with certain starting perks is really hot)?

Or maybe you got sick and had a fever? Fevers can kill you pretty quickly if not treated properly.

yea it had to be a combination of multiple things. Dying from heat should be easily avoidable if you have access to water to wash with.

I have way over 1000 hours played, for me getting wet always worked without exception. never came even close to dying from it.

here are some things that might have pushed you over the top even while wet

1) Campfire - just like Philtre said it ads heat. Turn it of or use Stove instead.

2) Clothing - Leather Pants are super hot but like Philtre said there is sweater like item that you can start with also which is super hot as well. Take clothes of until you are better. But just taking off the worst piece should be enough.

3) Low stamina - simulating that you did some hard work so you overheat from inside. Take a 15 minute rests to recover stamina when low to avoid this.

Fever might be also like Philtre said but I cannot confirm that since I am not sick often.
Take good care of yourself and drink spider lilly asap to get rid of it.

And of course some days are hoter than others.. if it was noon and the sky clear between days 60-90 that is the worst heat possible but that on its own you can deal with unless you are heavily clothed, siting next to the campfire and not cooling down with water.

You already have a mudhut with cooling this is great. There are other minor things you can do but washing on its own is enough if there is not something strong working against you. I will bet on leather pants :D.

Good luck if you ever start again! If you need help with anything feel free to ask its a pretty complex game. But there is an answer to every challenge.

Cheers!

a note to add, mud hut will NOT help you with overheating in dry season unless you are also wearing a palm hat and nothing else. For some reason you need both the hat and shelter in order to get 'heat insulation' which stops you from getting hyperthermia no matter how hot you feel, provided you arent next to an open fire inside, wearing dry clothes, or are tired. As another note, you should pin your stamina bar, if it's anything but full, it will heat you up. Hope this helps Survivor!

How do you pin the stamina bar?
