stupidest. death. ever.
I really wish that choosing to ignore monkeys didn't take time. I lost the first tourist run that managed to make it past a month because my guy stopped to watch a monkey instead of leaving it be and got trapped in the jungle over night. I caught a fever from the bug bites. I ran low on spider lilly and couldn't grow any more because the rain kept overwatering my crops and killing them. Eventually was forced to admit I was in an inescapable death spiral and just gave up. Because my guy stopped to watch a monkey.

There was literally nothing of value for the monkey to steal. I would have been perfectly happy to ignore that monkey and let it go about it's business, but for some unfathomable reason choosing to "ignore" still takes time.

My theory is, that the monkey knew that you were vulnerable to bug bites and so started capering around to capture your attention long enough for night to fall. Being outsmarted by a monkey must be somewhat embarrassing, you have my sympathies.

Tough luck. Fyi, you more likely caught a bacterial fever from being wet. Bug bites give fever through camp fever and malaria but tourist gets through the first with the starter tablets and malaria is very slow to act and unlikely to happen with reasonable play.

We believe it was specifically camp fever rather than bacterial fever. Anyway, we acknowledge that a large part of the problem was cutting timing too close and not watching our exhaustion better while scouting the highlands. Being forced to waste time we couldn't spare to ignore a monkey was just the absurd straw that broke the camel's back.

Once you have the technology, I recommend carrying a torch or candle, a fire starter, and some tinder in your backpack at all times. That way, you aren't stuck in place if you mistime going home.

Thanks. We'll keep that in mind for future runs.

Bacterial fever also happens from being dirty. It is way more likely to be bacterial fever, unless you find ways to circumvent getting camp fever in the first month. Just use the antibiotics early on for camp fever. It is a once and then immune disease. Take the pills only when the rash happens.

Hey Hey. 1000+ hours player here. Sorry to hear about your unfortunate demise. Let me help you and anyone else that might end up in similar situation with some usefull information :).

-------------
1. how to deal with Camp Fever as a Tourist?

a) Antibiotics:

Did you already use up the Tourist Antibiotics? They are in the medkit you start with and are there to help you out with the early game, especially with the Camp Fever which is really easy to get as the Tourist.

b) Growing Spider Lilly

yes it is possible even if you get plenty of rain.

If you Fertilize the Spider Lily inside Wetlands to 100 and plant it when there are no Fungus Infested fields already existing, it will grow before the Fungus can destroy it. You might not get the maximum yield but you will get plenty anyway.

You can grow many spider lily in a parallel like this as long as you plant it at the same time.

It also helps a lot if you plant it when it is not raining but I sucessfully grew spider lily during constant rain playthrough so i know it is possible.

So what happens when the Macaque shows up that it takes 15 minutes of your time?

I dont know many things should happen....

Maybe It jumps around and screams and throws pop and leaves at you so you are backing of and waiting for it to go away and make a huge circle around it.

Maybe something else.

Should it be 15 minutes... ? Maybe yes maybe not.

-------------------

In general though like other people already said it is a bad idea to stay outside of the Camp near the night, very often something will go wrong. This kind of unpredictability makes the game more insteresting.

If it was not a monkey it could have been a wild boar.

if it was not a wild boar it would be something else :).

------------------

My advice? Always carry a torch ( or a candle ), fire maker and some tinder with you.

I like to call it: "The Night Escape survival kit"

Cheers!

Sounds like someone didn't plan an emergency night escape kit on a Satchel pack 🧐.

Always remember to mass plant farms like 4,6,8 plots with ready fertilizer made from fish scraps raw or cooked, to make the crop fields , you want compost bin fertilizer though for 100% fertilizer rate for 15 minutes saving you 45 minutes when not using weak fertilizer, Palm leaves are easy materials for compost they rot to nothing anyway unlike fresh leaves which turn to Dry leaves for Tinder.

Yeah, always carry a light source in your backpack once you get the tech. Earlier on you can consider leaving a campfire in a heavily trafficked area (like the jungle if you're living in the wetlands)
