How do you get mortar?

I tried every combination of water, sand, dirt, mud... I need to build the well or else I'll die soon

You need to bake rocks, seashells or crushed conch in the kiln. The result is quicklime, which should open up the recipe for mortar.

It would be nice if the items that can make quicklime had the info in the card text. Something like "Can be cooked in a kiln to make quicklime"

And that kiln now needs to reach 900 degrees to do so ... which takes a while. It is advisable to do several loads of big rocks (which you can then break up) in one go, to avoid having to heat it up again.
