the combat style is very jumpscare but once you get used to how enemies spawn etc it's much less scary. I haven't finished it yet but about 10h in it's a lot less scary than the first 2 hours.

So the actual horror factor is not massive, but it has a few good scenes since the main character is not the badass with iron determination who can ignore everything around him. Overall nothing to lose sleep over, though

yes. very scary game. play it on impossible. you dont get a second chance if you die. you have to be mindful how you invest upgrade nodes, how you spend credits to buy the things you need, and how to deal with each kind of monster and situation without getting absolutely obliterated.
i just beat it on impossible a little while ago.
The constant battery of the 3d audio immersion and my personal Nvidia shader darkening the environment, will keep your adrenaline level high. But of course you'll need a powerful rig, or the lightscape will barely take into effect. Without AO, HDR and bad quality the graphics are way to bright and washed out.
