Dead Space

Only 30% of players completed the game on medium or higher?
I think it's interesting to see the stats for steam achievements and what people have done in their games and what that might say about how people play the game.

According to the achievements, 30.2% of players have completed the game once on medium or greater, and only 6.7% of players completed NG+ on medium or higher. So not even half of players finished the game and hardly anyone bothered doing a second run in all of these 2 years? That seems kinda bad.

Dead Space as an IP is not what it used to be.
EA certainly learned that as well....

A lot of people just buy games to own them and/or start a game out of boredom and then never touch it again. It's not exclusive to this game. You can always see the frequency of story related achievements in games decrease consistently from start to finish. At least it's not a reliable indicator for the quality of a game.

Yes, but the question is how much. Usually a good amount of players will have at least completed the campaign, but looking at the stats for the achievements the rates are low even for the earlier chapters. Chapter 3 only has 52% completion among players and Chapter 4 already shows less than half of players beat it. That's only a third of the way through the game.

The stats also say only 15% of players have even killed 10 enemies with a stomp. Stomping is so essential to success in the game.

Like Angel in the Dark said, it's like that for the vast majority of games. You'd be surprised how many people will buy a game and not play it all the way through. This game is also very intense. Not every person will be able to handle that intensity. It doesn't stop the game from being a masterpiece.

That's because they abandoned it for far too long due to unrealistic sales goals.

This is normal for most games though... In fact feels like a third is pretty high especially for a horror game.

Do horror games scare people away from playing them?

Some people end up biting off more than they can chew and dont realise it until later. They see cool visuals exciting action but perhaps after a few hours realise it's too stressful for them or maybe too hard (enemies too tough, limited ammo etc). After all, not all 'horror' games are equal. Some have monsters and gore and evocative visual design but the game is very arcadey and action focused (like some of the resident evil games), and then you have the more tense, survival focused ones.

Most other games are more easily digestible in comparison with a more approachable difficulty and completion curve. They're designed that way to reach the broadest audience.

That's how achievements for the vast majority of games are. Sometimes achievements that are as simple as booting the game up have less than 50. The sad reality is a large portion of people buy and never play. Stats would be more interesting if they had a min time requirement

None of this matches my experience with anybody that that consumes any horror media. You're kinda either into horror or you're not, and if you're not you wouldn't pay for the admission, and horror people that quit in the middle usually do so because they're bored rather than because they are scared.

Except, if people quitting randomly applies to any game regardless of genre, you can't correlate statistics on people qutting horror games specifically with the reasons you're assuming, unless you'd directly ask every single person why they quit.

Outlast is a +10 year old horror game, very critically acclaimed. Only 48 % of players got to the first story-related achievement. Only 24.1 % finished the game.

Same goes for Amnesia The Dark Descent. Only 22-18% started the game, under 6.6% finished it.

since you mentioned outlast- I just tried outlast 2- is it worth playing? I played for about an hour and I was like meh... I liked outlast 1 and amnesia- both were solid.
