Plot hole or something else?
Why didn't EarthGov just launch the marker into a star?

Do you read the text logs at all? A lot of lore is devulged in them. Apparently, Earthgov knows about the marker and its dangers. They don't care, because they want to use the technology for themselves. The markers emit endless energy and they want to use that as a free resource. No more depending on finite energy sources. It's corrupt and greedy.

This echoes the Alien franchise of movies, where corrupt corporations know the xenomorphs are dangerous, but want to capture and breed them to use for science and weapons.

The games are not too consistent.

EarthGov buried the marker which you find in DS 1 a long time ago so noone can find it because they can't control it. Yet there are multiple EarthGov marker test sites in DS 2 and 3. Why didn't EarthGov just dig up and use the marker from Aegis VII before the events of DS 1?

The marker was buried a long time ago. None of the politicians or military leaders who were alive when it was buried would be alive by the time of DS1. Just enough time has passed for humanity to forget the horrors, and they are arrogant enough to think they can control it now. It's the old saying, those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. We can also factor into that humanity is suffering now more than when it was buried. Overpopulation has created a lack of resources, which is why Earthgov needs the marker to create an infinite energy source.

As you asked me I shall ask you, did you read the text logs at all? EarthGov knew about the marker on Aegis VII and they knew about the Ishimura going there to retrieve it. That's why they sent Kendra and the Valor with nukes to assess the situation and "contain it" if necessary. Kendra even states that they are going to hide it again so noone can find it for a long time.

Earthgov wants the marker to build more markers. It's all in Dead Space 2. It doesn't matter what Kendra thinks they plan to do with it.

EarthGov wants more markers. That's why they hid it on a planet that nobody should have been on. Mining on Aegis 7 is illegal

I wonder... why bury it on a planet? Why not just launch it into an open area of space and call it a day. No catching up to that if it's flying light speed across the galaxy.
