Remake or Remaster?
I'm a little confused by todays games when they call it a remake. RE2 remake was a legit remake of the entire game but it stayed loyal to the original story although much was changed. Last of Us was called a remake; however, IMO, it's more like a remaster because the textures, animations, and models were updated but the overall game was still the same.

I've never played Dead Space and I want my first experience to be what many of you experienced back in the day when it was originally released.

Which brings me to my question...

Is Dead Space a graphical overhaul similar to a remaster? Or, was the game remade where it's now different from the original?

It's different enough that it can't be called a remaster, but it's also not different enough that it's hard to call it a ground-up remake.

That said, it is a lot better to play than the original (not that the original game is bad to play now, but it felt sluggish next to its sequel and one of the biggest changes for me is that Isaac moves a LOT more like he does in Dead Space 2 than he did in 1)

There are changes to the weapons upgrade system and how to unlock certain areas to get upgrades. Some sequences were totally reworked, and they added more ways to navigate the ship. It's more than just a remaster. BUT it still 95% the same in terms of story and level layout.

If you want to play the whole series, you might go into DS2 and DS3 a bit spoiled if you start with the remake first. That's the only bad thing about remakes, if the sequels aren't also remade, then you might feel let down when you play them - not that DS2 and DS3 are bad or too dated.

To me, a remaster is just straight up higher res, higher textures, etc. - no changes to the story or levels. You start with the same assets and improve them. Remakes are totally made from the ground up even if it's just graphics and sound, but many remakes make some changes to the story, level layout, and mechanics.

Resident Evil 4 remake had way more changes compared to the Dead Space remake. As someone who played all the Dead Space games, I can say that the remake is better than the original.

Thanks for the feedback. This was exactly the type of information I was looking for. I think I'll skip the original and play this new version. Thanks again fellas.

remasters are just graphic updates mainly, this is a remake which features updated gameplay, mainly taking aspects from dead space 2( it takes the new 0 gravity controls and weapon specials) and 3 ( the side quests) and also adds some new things like special weapon upgrades you can find and a new more random system for necromorph spawn so it isnt as scripted
you should still play the original at some point though, its great on its own

A Remake is when you take the concept and ideas but make a new game of that. Sure with similarities, but its basically a different game and a reinterpretation of the original.
A Remaster takes a game and overhauls aspects to "modernize" it or slightly change a few things to raise quality.
Definitive Edition is an Edition with improvements and new content that packs all the available content into one package, improving overall quality of all content released for a game.

re2remake is not a remake, but a reimagining. remake is like re1remake, not changing too much from areas and plot

Hey man I know I'm late but this remake has a new alternate ending, fully fleshed out sidequests which weren't available in the original game, a lot more exploration, A LOT more dialogues and lore, protagonist is fully voiced unlike the mute protagonist from the original, and some chapters are completely reimagined. Bossfights stayed the same. Overall I do consider it a full remake. The original felt more like an action-horror game, this is still that but it feels more like an immersive sim with the amount of paths you can explore around the ship.
