They're great for killing those annoying enemies with tentacles on the wall. All small enemies will be destroyed, like those annoying little ones.
I'd recommend having at least the force gun or flamethrower, as they both strip the flesh from enemies and kill the crawler and guardian enemies more efficiently than other weapons. That said, they work best as support weapons. Burning an enhanced necromorph before using the pulse rifle to take off its limbs allows me to kill it in about 10 rounds from each, typically using less than an ammo pickup.
