Oh come on.
Seriously ignorant take and reeks of a edgy centrist or genuine lefty, not that I cared about it, but I would prefer they did not make any kind of changes for ideological or modernization sake. Yes that means all of the bad, naughty, ewwie, grossoe things you hate.
Plays better, weapons are funner to use, level design is better, encounter design is less obnoxious.
Writing is subjective.
Only true negative I'd say is that it's too easy. It really needs a proper very hard mode.
Original had better sound design. Necromorphs sound more like monstrous reincarnated corpses of dead shipmen instead of drunks who forgot there was pizza in the oven or your average citizen of Portland. Brute and Hivemind roars were butchered along with Isaac’s screams (yes I know they were stock sounds, still better than the remake imo).
Animations were better. Motion capture doesn’t work for Necromorphs. An example of this is the elevator scene with the slasher trying to break in. In the original, it was more frantic and desperate with its forceful entry as the puke pours out of its mouth. In the remake, it’s way too “smooth” and does it effortlessly.
I didn’t like Isaac talking. It’s this reason I didn’t find Dead Space 2 as scary. A silent protagonist makes you feel more isolated and alone since you can’t rely on him to react along with you. One less voice makes the ship more eerie. Personal preference.
The marker was more mysterious in the original. It was introduced way later and when you first see it in the cargo hold, it’s almost a Lovecraftian experience. In the remake, it’s almost brought up immediately if I remember correctly or just way too early imo. For this reason and many others I liked the original more for having a more mysterious tone to it.
Writing/story was better. Im biased because I really didn’t like Motive’s story telling in Battlefront 2 and Squadrons which is their only other works as far as Im aware. Hammond was my favorite character in the original since he was an ideal leader who took charge and was calm about n the face of danger as a leader should be. He was proactive and worked alongside Isaac. In the remake, I feel he was missing for the majority of the game only to abruptly reappear in the Valor. I think they did this to improve Kendra’s character who was improved since her original personality made her obviously someone who was going to betray you. However I don’t think Hammond needed to be lowered to bring Kendra up. Also the whole Chen thing felt forced. He wasn’t that big of a character.
I liked Kyne and Mercer’s portrayal in the original more as well. Mercer was a more fanatical occultist while Kyne was a desperate schizo scientist wanting to do the right thing. Why did they do my boy Kyne dirty like that? They completely altered his look and voice. What was wrong with the original?
For the political stuff… I didn’t need to know Jacob Temple helped pack the sewage exit with other men on the Ishimura. He has a girlfriend, keep it at that. Making him bisexual just felt so forced and unnecessary, disgusting even. The “non binary” woman “Ariel” was also needless addition that’s just cringe. I can tolerate some more racial diversity, no harm in it but it seems they went out of their way to make sure we have X amount of Y (except white men) in the posters. Is it very small? Yes, but it comes off as unnatural and motivated by an outside personal agenda to instill a certain social view through small simple means before introducing the bigger ideas later down the line. These things broke the enjoyment as I knew the reasoning behind the changes, especially the whole erasure of the boundaries between men and women in the game (making their bodies androgynous and no separate spaces for men and women). Just backwards if you ask me. Original didn’t do any of this crap.
Beyond that, I enjoyed the remake for the graphical updates, no loading screen, gameplay improvements, and cool suits (yes I like the new level 6 suit) but I miss the original level 1 suit. Overall 8/10. Wish there was more content like a horde mode or expanded sections for the cool features like the circuit choices.
It’s a masterpiece imo. I would rate it 9,5/10 but the game is stuttering too much so unfortunately I can’t rate it higher than 7/10.
Hmmm, RE2 remake is pretty amazing IMO. Not sure which I'd put higher but both are wonderful games.
RE3 is definitely lower but is okay.
What didn't you like about the REmakes? 2 was amazing even with the lack of spiders, RE3 was okay but still felt like an add on to RE2 like its original
The first remake that came out on gamecube is something I would consider one of the best remakes ever made
However, there are some things the original still does better. DS1 2008 has a minimalism that creates a stronger sense of isolation, thus lending to the expression "sometimes less is more". DS1 2008 has less story and less radio banter, which is a benefit to the experience. DS1 2023 is somewhat bloated in this regard, which takes away from the ambience in some ways. And it's been said a few times, but I do wonder if the sound design in DS1 2008 is better.
DS1 2023 is an "atmospheric game"
DS1 2008 is an "ominous experience"
