They are machines made of biomass, controlled by Lovecraftian entities called the Brethren Moons for the purpose of reproduction. They are technically part of an eldritch alien super-organism.

Genetically, they're largely human, but resequenced by the market signal, which gives them their extra appendages, appearances, and inhuman resistance to damage.

Fire off a marker on an alien world though, and you get Tau Volantis.

They are just human biomass that has been repurposed and rebuilt by the marker signal, with only purpose to kill enough people to reach critical biomass and then they gather around a marker and their bodies are gathered in the sky in order to create another blood moon. Even if you kill them, the dead flesh just gets used for something else after a while.
