3D Audio
Do your self a favor and enable 3D Audio, having it on is a next level experience. Don't forget to enable Spatial Sound on Windows too.

Is 3D audio not on by default? That's odd if so. What is it like playing with it off?

+Dolby Atmos for headphones (ms store).

The audio configuration can depend on your hardware. For me, the best setting is multi-channel. I'm using a very high end sound card (Muse op-amps) with 5.1+ speaker setting in the game, and dolby atmos for headphones (as dude above said, MS store). Atmos takes the multi-channel sound and creates the positional audio. My head-phones are Beyerdynamic DT-1990 Pro, which are just ridiculously awesome. Truly, if you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.

How does atmos compare to the games own positional audio? I have tried external surround to positional (years ago and not dolby) myself and couldn't really tell much of a difference.

This has a very detailed breakdown of how it works. As with most things, it's a matter of taste. It's $15 on the windows store, but I think it has a trial period.

But Dolby Atmos for Home Theaters is for free, besides the Dolby Atmos capable home theater of course...

And also don't forget to mute the music. It makes the game more immersive, the scares less cheap and the enemies sneakier.

Those are the ingame options and I don't think they leave any room for interpretation.

Discrete 5.1 audio when used without an AV receiver (which isn't standard for PC) obviously uses the "multichannel" option, while AV Receiver - with speakers or headphones - use the 3D audio option. If you don't have an AV receiver and use the 3D audio regardless, the engines 3D audio software is used instead, but for that they recommand headphones.

I have an analog 5.1 speaker system. It uses an amplifier, but it's not an AV receiver, which would be digital (connected via HDMI or SPDIF/optical usually). Multichannel option for me therefore. Simple.

You don't know what you are talking about. Dolby Atmos is only possible with eARC. No ARC SPDIF, optical or what so ever. And you do not need just any receiver, you need a Dolby Atmos Receiver and the additional speakers.

If you're completely new to sound, 3D Audio has nothing at all to do with Surround Sound. The best quality 3d audio is called Binuaral audio, and has been used since the 1930's, and in the 1930's computers only existed in science fiction.

But that's ok, this half-century old former movie studio sound engineer couldn't possibly know anything about computers or sound, so feel free to pay me no mind.

Surround Sound, and gimmicky things like Dolby THX, just expand on binaural audio by recording with more and more complex compound microphones and on even more channels to create a more life-like audio experience.

This post prompted me to look a little bit deeper in Settings / Audio and set proper output for my system.

I have Dolby Atmos receiver and it is connected using eARC (over HDMI).
In Windows my output is set to Dolby Atmos for Home Theater.

When I installed the game I selected "Multichannel" option in Dead Space because I was thinking the 3D option is only for headphones (when using Dolby Atmos for Headphones, Windows Sonic for Headphones etc.). But today I re-read the description and it says "headphones or a compatible AV receiver", which prompted me to switch to 3D.
