normal fire for normal enemies
The Alt-fire stuns everything short of a Splitter (is that what those things are called? The ones that wail and break apart into little appendages.) for the entire duration of the wall. With full damage + duration upgrades (including the special one) anything weaker than a Twitcher - including enhanced slashers - that you hit with the initial alt-fire will be stunlocked to death. This even applies on hard / impossible.
Primary fire is not effected by body-blocking, meaning that even without the alt-fire you can pump out damage to mass amounts of enemies, and stun them, with impunity.
Really though, the alt fire is why it's good. You can bait an entire room's spawns into a choke point - including the shooters via LOS - and make sure everything that comes through will get stun-locked and probably killed. Anything that's too tough can be leisurely dispatched while they're standing there, flailing in between, for 10+ seconds. So one alt fire + 1 ripper saw will clear almost every room in the game.
I would argue that basically every weapon in the game right now is good. The Contact Beam is slightly overpowered (since the ammo is too easy to come by, mostly), and the Pulse Rifle requires a lot of upgrades to get the most out of it, but everything has a good purpose.
The Flamethrower in particular does a great job at dealing with smaller enemies, tentacle guys on the walls, and the flame wall can buy you a lot of time in a pinch. I tend to use it as my initial weapon a lot of the time, switching to my Ripper or Line Gun to finish off enemies that have been burned sufficiently. The flames can outright kill, but their real strength is in stripping the flesh from enemies so they are more vulnerable to other attacks.
This run I am using ripper + line gun.
I might just go plasma cutter/flame thrower. The flames look pretty awesome in this game, I used it long enough to know that. The firewall or whatever the secondary was called, was awesome.
