A Question about the Hunter Side-Quest [Spoilers]

When Dr. Mercer did his experiments on Brant Harris, did Harris simply "become" the Hunter without dying? The final audio log sounded like he was changing into something else but he was clearly still alive. I thought necromorphs had to be dead first in order to transform.

The Hunter is the result of a living human being infected with Necromorph tissue. Harris was subject to the same thing the infectors do, only while he was still alive. Whether he himself is still alive or not is debatable, but this is basically a "The Thing" situation - he was forcibly turned into a Necromorph while still alive.
