That "auto" is it reads the brightness from windows, and sets it to that.
You might have to run windows HDR calibration in order to see HDR properly.

Also for me i just have HDR on all the time, cause youtube videos sometimes support it. I've only been doing this since windows 11 tho, 10 was horrible.
