You don't have to, it's free. You only need to charge stasis.

Kenesis has its own keybind, no need to “switch”. For whatever reason I cannot remember without having my keyboard in front of me, but I think it’s X?

Kenesis, not magnetism. On the PC, it is activated by Aiming your weapon and pressing "F" (default keybind) to pick up an object which can then be carried around, or launched away from you by pressing Primary Fire (default left-mouse button). Heavy, sharp or pointy objects can injure or kill enemies. Light objects can get their attention, or just plain be amusing to hit something with - pelting a Hunter with Coffee mugs or tissue samples is a riot and annoys the hades out of the Hunter. There is no charge on Kenesis - it is simply free to use whenever you like.

If you wish to simply release an object, stop aiming and it will fall down (or float if in zero-g) where you released it.

When you get decent with it, you can use it to grab the green breakable crates, release them when they start moving towards you, then swing a punch and shatter them in mid-flight, and even catch whatever they contained, all in one movement that looks supremely cool.

F sounds familiar, for whatever reason I was like “naw that’s for health, has to be a different keybind”.
