You did a very accurate analysis i'd say.
I have the same GPU - ASUS ROG STRIX 1660 SUPER paired with a RYZEN 5 3600 and i can run games that released in the past 2 years without any sort of issues and that have higher recommended requirements.
Also very good point when you mentioned "linear corridor shooters" - those types of games aren't usually that demanding because of less stuff to render and the game world itself is smaller compared to the regular open world or sandbox type of games.
We'll be able to run Dead Space without issues i'd say at medium-high settings at 60 FPS and more OR probably a locked 60 FPS at HIGH settings.
It does have 8 GB but strictly for a game to run on LOW graphics settings i don't think there are any games that require such a high amount of VRAM only for the LOW graphics preset.
There are plenty of games out there that run just fine on LOW even on 2-3 GB GPUs.
The game definetly won't need 8 GB for LOW - in fact it should run fine on HIGH or ULTRA on an 8 GB GPU.
I don't have a good source for the claim but apparently AMD's GPUs utilise memory differently to Nvidia but it is generally supported by certain system requirements for other games that, in some cases, specifically state a higher VRAM count for AMD. So with that in mind, since the minimum here for AMD is also a 8GB GPU (RX 5700) that suggests that Nvidia GPUs with lower VRAM counts will be capable of running the game fine (assuming they have the performance).
From TechPowerUp's relative performance chart, the GTX 1660 Ti/Super are very similar in performance to the GTX 1070 (regular GTX 1660 is a bit lower) which suggests they chose the 1070 because it has 8GB. But, as I said in my other reply above, the 1070 and the recommended GPU (RTX 2070) having the same VRAM count makes me doubt the importance of the 1070's 8GB. Perhaps they wanted an older GPU in the minimum requirements... but then why pick a much more recent AMD GPU for the minimum?
These are very weird system requirements the more you analyse it. It is rarely accurate and only meant as a guide, not least because of commonly absent information like target quality settings, framerates and resolutions but they do generally follow a certain logic. Here it's almost like they were pulling choices out of a hat. :\
I think you will be in the green, but honestly just buy the game, try it out and if your hardware is not sufficient, refund it within 2 hours of game time.
I do it all the time.
