Been through retroshooters by the dozens. Why is this one special?
Anything new mechanic-wise? Or just another team of level designers who couldn't afford proper graphics?
Why would you buy this if you own 20 retro shooters already? Does it bring anything new to the table?

Because modern shooters are dead. Yes, the most popular genre in the world is dead for a decade. On the modern market we have only semi-RPG chimeras. Even Serious Sam fell into this. And retro-shooters, remakes and new, are only true shooters nowadays.

Something new - no need, on the contrary - these games should stay classic as much as possible. I've been playing them because they have not new gameplay features. And if you like shooters - you will play all of them.

You buy this game because you like these types of games. Nobody asks people why they buy every single COD or FIFA lol.

Thats like asking why people keep buying racing games when all you do is Hold W and drive

It's not it's just a glorified Doom clone, play Ashes: Afterglow instead since it actually offers something unique and is free.

For me I found the level design in the demo really interesting - huge, intricate maps. Secret areas were very well done. Loved the overall tone and the vibe of the game. Music was awesome, and the weapons and enemies were great.

Really excited for the early access launch in.....less than an hour!

Its not special. You could live without it. I played these 2 levels of demo and didnt like it, too big and convoluted. Also too dark, ill pass.

For me the game is very much special because it's an almagalm of specific things that have provided the doom modding community it's staying power - carefully designed challenging encounters, good incentive for exploration/resource management, where secrets may actually come up very handy instead of being littered throughout just because, lean but stylish visual design to the geometry of the levels: none of it's goofy or wacky for the sake of being retro, instead awe inspiring with it's limited means of conveying a sense of place.

One thing that the Supplice demo did is it didn't put a chasm inbetween each difficulty mode, which something even recent retro FPS like Ion Fury and WRATH did do (i'd still hope for these games to have a custom difficulty mode). In most games difficulty level ramps up the damage from enemies AND sometimes simultaneously adds in extra quantity of enemies, instead of focusing on making the encounters more challenging with enemy placements or providing less resources, implying more careful/effective tactics.

Something else the game does that is very very intriguing and at least i haven't seen alot of is the Marathon' style narrative, which had a very compelling story throughout the series. And having the opportunity to experience something similliar in a context of a Doom-based engine, which haven't been notorious for the plot, is for me at the very least curious. Ashes series had some compelling world building for sure, but precisely in some of the readable logs on the computers, but the character interactions in town were so-so and a bit drawn out, IMO.

Ashes 2063 and its sequel Afterglow are awesome, can confirm. If you like fps games, you owe it to yourself to check it out. There's a standalone version on ModDB that won't require you to mess around with program files to get it running like most Doom mods.

Fun fact: the darkness has to do with how the program is set to handle shadows. You can go into the settings menu and fiddle with them, making things much clearer. There's a thread on the matter around here somewhere.

You know what would sell like hot cake?
An indie retro shooter in retro look with modern and fresh mechanics. Nobody wants retro mechanics. Only kinda retro looks. Octopath traveler did it right for the JRPG genre. Someone needs to do it for shooters. I need "advanced movement and then some" or "deep weapon customization" or some such to even get me interested.
They should cut the retro mechanics already. It's not 1994 anymore.

"Got no grappling hook, rolling and vaulting or at least dual flamethrowers? Then get off my lawn with your "retroshooter", you lazy pleb!"

... is my attitude ... maybe i'm jaded, maybe i'm onto something. It'll be the standard one day.
I think an indie studio that isn't innovative doesn't deserve my money. My life is too short for mediocre shovelware. Make something amazing already!

Look at all this wasted potential ...

That one sucks. Too much open world exploration for a boomer shooter. Ashes 2063 was much better as it was linear.
Mr.SeriousCatt Apr 6, 2023 @ 6:22pm
what octopath traveler did? another more of the same Jrpg mechanics from today with old graphics, wow..

take a pick... Im sure you'll find retro shooter with old and new mechanics.

But you know, nothing needs to be exactly what you are looking for eh... some of us enjoy this kind of old retro shooters with old mechanics

Supplice's shooting runs with the Doom formula but ups lethality in every way and feels pretty good to me honestly. If it's not to your taste, as you've said, there's plenty of other retro-style shooters to play instead.

The devs aren't "on your lawn" with their shooter, you're on theirs complaining about a game you haven't played and I don't think you're onto anything aside from a way to farm clown awards.

Because it's the only shooter of it's kind that forces you to spent half your playtime reading text logs and to learn all about social justice virtues, as you navigate your black, female character through maps, taht are too big and have her shoot at enemies that you don't really get a chance to even look at.
Seriously, I can visualize literally every enemy from every 90s Build- and Doom-Engine game in my mind - but this game? The enemies die to to fast, you don't even know what you're shooting at. I blame the pacing of the game in general - it's too fast for what it wants to be.
