[UPDATED] Quest2 / RTX VR Settings: Fix all problems
Hello, my first experience with F122 in VR was bad. Image was blurred, head movement was stuttering, I had many crashes. By tweaking some settings I was able to fix it all and turn F122 into one of best / most polished VR games ever made. period.

So, this post (continuously updated) is for everyone out there who is having the same issues. Please, DON'T GIVE UP and try to give it a shot, it's well worth.

My specs: Ryzen 5600X, RTX3080, Quest2.

Here we are with the settings, you need to change things in many places:

1) Oculus Quest 2: Disable AirLink so you can play with the Link cable (image quality is much better)
2) Oculus App: Set 72Hz refresh rate and automatic resolution (in my case it's 4128x2096)
3) Oculus Debug Tool (you can find this app in C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics): Set "PC Async Spacewarp" to Disabled. Under Oculus Link set "Encode Bitrate" to 400, "Link Sharpening" to Enabled, "Mobile ASW" to Enabled
4) Nvidia Control Panel: Set "VR prerendered frames" to "Application controlled"
5) Steam: Select F1 22 properties and deselect both "overlay" and "cinema mode", under "General"
6) Steam VR: In video options, put resolution to 100%. Also disable the controller add-on. I also disabled SteamVR home but I don't know if it makes a difference
7) F1 22 Graphics menu: Set gamma to 70 (much better colors). In the video settings, select Sharpening TAA + Fidelity as the Antialiasing method (best one by far), 16x Anysotropic filtering and set Dynamic resolution to "On" in "Balanced" mode with 50 as minimum resolution. Put screen resolution to 1920x1080. In the main page, select "Low" as the graphics preset
8) F1 22 VR Settings: Put resolution to 180. Also, some says it's better to turn off stencils

Start from here and adjust to your need / specs. In particular, you can reduce resolution in VR settings up to 100 and increase graphical setting to High or Very High (Very High is still pretty fluid for me but gives me crashes. High doesn't).

Good luck to all of you and have a great F1 time in VR!!! Go, Ferrari, go!!!

You’re welcome. In the meantime I partially changed my ingame settings to give even more clarity. Now I have to say it’s astonishing. Basically (starting from the settings in the original post) I reduced the graphical quality to Low, set dynamic resolution on and in VR settings put the multiplier to 180. I also reduced Gamma to 70. Try it, for me (with the 3080) it’s fantastic and smooth as butter

Cheers mate will try now. When you see VR settings do you mean the in game VR settings tab?

Yes

Also for dynamic resolution did you leave them settings on default after you changed it to on? So like balanced and that

I left it on balanced and 50 (minimum resolution). Guys, this game in VR rocks!!!

Hello, I finally managed to fix all my problems (especially stuttering) and I hope I could help some of you, too. It's been hard to tweak, but it's well worth it. Now I think this is one of the most polished VR games I ever played.

My specs: Ryzen 5600X, RTX3080, Quest2. Now I'm able to play with maxed graphics with no blur / stuttering / crashes at all.

So, here we are with the settings, you need to change things in many places:

1) Oculus Quest 2: Disable AirLink so you can play with the Link cable (image quality is much better)
2) Oculus App: Set 72Hz refresh rate and automatic resolution (in my case it's 4128x2096)
3) Oculus Debug Tool (you can find this app in C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics): Set "PC Async Spacewarp" to Disabled. Under Oculus Link set "Distortion Curvature" to High, "Link Sharpening" to Enabled, "Mobile ASW" to Enabled
7) F1 22 Graphics menu: In the video settings, select Sharpening TAA + Fidelity as the Antialiasing method (best one by far), 16x Anysotropic filtering and deselect Dynamic resolution. Put screen resolution to 1920x1080. In the main page, select "High" as the graphics preset. If you struggle, you can try to lower this. NOTE: I'm able to play with 72Hz fixed also with Very High but that gives me crashes (EGO Dump) every now and then. With High, I don't experience any crash
8) F1 22 VR Settings: I think I didn't change anything here (leave as default) but write me if you have some doubts
9) Finally, my startup sequence is as following: Startup Quest 2, Connect Oculus Link, Launch F1 22 in VR Mode from Steam

Please try, I noticed a lot of difference fiddling with the settings but once you find the sweet spot I can tell you this is a great game. Great visuals, great frame rate and great polished experience.

Good luck to all of you!!!
Hi, unfortunately I can't turn off this "Asynchronous Spacewarp". I mean, I did what you wrote and turned it to OFF (tried it both in Oculus Debug Tool and also in Oculus Tray Tool) and I see the graph at constant 72 hz (performance HUD) but as soon as the camera switches to the VR-cockpit view the graph suddenly drops to 36 hz (FPS). That means that this "Asynchronous Spacewarp" is still on, right? because it halfes the framerate.
Could it be that some SteamVR settings still have this on because the game starts via SteamVR and NOT Oculus?
Any ideas how I can get rid of this reducing framerate to 50%? Help please!

You have to relaunch the Oculus debug tool whenever you turn on and off your airlink connection...I would close the deugy tool and to relaunch it again....using Run as Administrator...

For more performance you can also use VRToolkit: https://github.com/fholger/vrperfkit

It says only DX11, but it´s working here!
...with textfile "vrperfkit.yml" you can configure it, i use:

upscaling:
-method: cas
-renderScale: 0.9
-sharpness: 0.7

Performance optimization:
-radius: 100 (with 100 it´s disabled)

foveated rendering:
-also disabled

Heads up for everyone:

This does not fix bad head tracking on quest 2.
populationxx2 2022 年 7 月 2 日 上午 9:04
Yes, these are only little fixes and for me also not 100%, but better than nothing.
....i hope for a patch!

performance is great for me, but i mean i have sometimes little stutters here and there although with good fps and frametime, i don´t know what´s the problem and yes, headtracking/jitters.....maybe this IS THE problem ?!

Heads up for everyone:

It does not. Is almost like the headset can't refresh fast enough if your FOV is changing (like moving your head from side to side). You would see that your performance headroom would drop from 40% to negative % just from moving your head. That's some strange stuff going on there. It isn't noticeable if you can use a higher refresh rate and your fps isn't tanking and while racing. Although it does get to you if you entering into a tight corner in your 2nd gear. It almost like you are experiencing G force or porpoising visually...:)

Okay guys. I just plugged out my G27 wheel and my Fanatec-pedals and used the X-Box-Controller (gamepad) instead and know what? My frameratedrop from 72 FPS to 36 FPS AND the massive jittering when moving my head in the cockpit was gone!
So I can definitely confirm that the problem is the pedals or wheel plugged in via USB!
In the cockpit I still get small jitters sometimes but it's night&day to the situation before. @nick: please try it with a gamepad and unplug wheel and pedals (I know this is not a good solution but just for trying out if your jittering = bad head tracking goes away too)!

I think this is a great suggestion for everyone, to troubleshoot where the problem is.

Heads up for everyone:

This does not fix bad head tracking on quest 2.

It did it for me and, apparently, for other people of the forum. I have to say I’m using a Xbox controller so Wheels/pedals could be part of the equation.

So I've tried different versions of this to get CAS sharpening to work, and this one doesn't work either. Are you SURE it works? I would suggest setting debug mode to true (or toggle it on) to see if you actually see the radius and post a screenshot, because I don't believe it works, no offense. I tried setting CAS to 5 just to see if it would oversharpen it, and it didn't do anything. The debug radius doesn't show up either.

Like i said, it´s for performance, it´s not sharper, but if you measure your frametime you see, it works and you could raise up your graphic settings with same performance as before.

sharpest image you get with f1 2022 is ingame option "FSR + sharpening."

p.s. in oculus desktop app my resolution is at 5408x2736 (maximum), in VD it´s higher, so i could say, yes, it´s sharp.

so, i could play it in very high resolution with ultra settings, performance is good, but annoying are the bugs.

EDIT: i have the origin version, i extract the VRToolkit in f1_2022 root directory and it´s really measurable. ;-)
damn, so a good immersion and performance but we could not enjoy it!

I have tried it with gamepad it makes no difference i have plenty of headroom aswell you can see the weird head tracking when in a menu which has you seated in the car just looking left and right it will slowly lag behind your actual head movements.

I have a Fanatec (1st beta tester wheel), but actually not in use.....first time i play with controller and i couldn´t accelerate with my controller (100km/h max)....unplug the usb stick for the wheel and it works.

...next i will try it without all, only keyboard, but not yet. :steamhappy:
