We actually considered adding a literal script kiddie mode where you can get a "hack tool" which transforms the terminals into a GUI. It was supposed to be a bit of a joke about programs which do something you can already do with a few terminal commands. But yeah, in the end we decided that the terminals are a deliberate design choice and that we want to highlight them instead of stuffing them behind another feature. There will be more tutorializing around it, though (I'm actually working on that right now!) but it's unlikely we will cut it completely.
Plenty of games cater to you.
I didn't tell them to not cater to those who actually want terminal engagement. Someone else JUST cited that despite liking the system they also had trouble getting to grips with it.
Get off your elitist high horse, generic private profile grumpy Steam forum grumbler #5600.
Oh yeah, I'm not saying cut it, just that right now it can feel like a softlock in an otherwise exceptionally intuitive game.
I understand where you're coming from, but I want to point something out. I should say this doesn't particularly apply to you because you seem to be respectful and reasonable, but there's a large current of people who aggressively require that all games be fine-tuned to their taste specifically, and they often claim that the developers are elitists if they decide not to do that. I feel that it's really just another form of gate keeping. It's trying to keep out people who are interested in a more niche game. That's the same thing as trying to keep out people who are interested in a more accessible game.
I know it sucks to feel like a given game isn't for you, but there are thousands of releases on Steam every week. There are lots of great games out there that you can play right now that won't require mentally taxing puzzle solving. I strongly feel like that it is better for gaming as a medium if not every project has to get simplified and made easier in order to satisfy the maximum number of people. It's OK if a given game is not as fun for you, that's why other people are making games. If we all have to make our games as middle-of-the-road as possible, everything ends up being the same and every game out there is really bland.
Now, having said all that, we're always looking to improve user experience and make things appear more logical, to give more tools to the player to be able to solve the puzzles on their own. That's why we're currently working on tutorializing the feature more heavily and adding more clues for the first few terminals so you can get a hang of it more quickly. In fact, we're re-working the syntax of the commands to make them all more similar, that way once you learn how to use one command, you're able to learn the other ones more quickly. We're also adding auto-complete and other QOL features that will make the terminal more comfy to use. But, ultimately, we want to make a weird, niche, puzzle-heavy and tricky kind of game that really wants you to stop and think, to be creative and experiment. It's not meant to be a smooth sailing, constant flow kind of experience. That's just not the vision!
first i had to find the tiny PDA inside the trash bin under the desk, i read it. it said the username is bigmanZ and the password is ztarsucks666 but it just DOESNT WORK
it's insanely frustrating. the whole action comes to dead, rotting, maggot infested stop. when it was mainly supposed to be a game about shooting and exploration.
im sorry but exploration is not checking under every desk and searching inside every trash bin for progression. what's next? having to open every cupboard and drawer? there has to be some way to ease progression without runing the game flow with these ungodly terminals
edit: this whole time i was supposed to type "login" before the username and password. oh come ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on! this is exactly the kind of unintuitive bs i was talking about.
why is this futurising sociery using DOS prompts from the 1970's????
I wasn't saying you were being elitist or anything? I understand the value of niche games and indie studios pursuing their creative ambitions - I've covered a lot of them over the last decade and am now even working on my own project that replicates Wii-style aiming. I've immense respect for the craft and prioritizing a unique vision over tap water game design.
The message this rather lengthy reply was directed at was simply me responding to the other user being hostile and hiding behind anonymity, a frequent problem on Steam and social media in general. It's precisely this kind of attitude that turns people away and comes across as gatekeeping in its own right. Their message was neither constructive nor conducive to healthy conversation - no more useful than the person raging in the comment behind this one.
So, I'm just gonna back away here. Y'all have best of luck with the game.
I'm legit wondering if I'm in the minority when it comes to having a basic understanding of using a terminal. I've never used linux in my life (not directly at least, I know everything runs on it), let alone being a terminal jokey. But isn't it fairly common knowledge that you type "help" to get info on how to use commands? And you get all you need from there, except for the actual passwords ofc, and that's the part that took me the longest - finding the damn PDA that my brain just refused to acknowledge.
Oh man, so there's this game called Shadows of Doubt...
That aside, I think a lot of these problems could be solved with more detailed error messages, like "Command "bigmanZ zstarsucks666" not found. Type "help" to view available commands" or something like that.
Yeah that's a great idea. Not a full remedy but will make the terminals much more understandable
I liked the demo a lot and just like thatother dude, I got stuck at the abc123 part.
I don't understand why it wouldn't work though.
I'll probably buy the game anyway because I see a lot of potential in the demo.
Great job so far!
Like this is a cool game and i love the feel but it comes to a SCREECHING HALT when you hit a terminal it is a pace destroyer and if simplifying that is too much of a compromise for the art i get it but i'll have to pass. My 8 to 5 is frustrating enough i don't need its nonsense following me home to my gaming. sorry.
