Repetitive
So, I played the demo, and while I enjoyed the game for the most part... it didn't have much to offer considering it's a roguelike. It felt very repetitive and like it could get old quickly. Is that the case for you? Or do you feel the full game does provide enough variety to keep it interesting for an extended period of time?

Like... combat was pretty basic for a turn-based tactical. Kill the enemy crew or instill them with enough fear they surrender. Are there eventually other combat goals to switch it up a bit aside from "kill everyone?" For example... some turn-based tactical games have you attempt to capture some sort of device/flag, rescue hostages, last so many rounds, etc.

Random story events felt... bland. I think these would have been better if all choices came down to specific crew skills and a dice roll to make it more random and interesting. Also, it tells you the outcome of the choice you make, as well. Story events just weren't that exciting for me.

I'm guessing you can switch up your mates and acquire better ones, but do you always have to use the same? Or can you have a variety of mates during one voyage? Using the same "mates" over and over got a bit old, as well.

It just has a very slow start, and I'm assuming, as your crew grows, and you level up your hired pirates from the tavern... it gets more interesting and diversified. Is that correct?

I'm just having a difficult time deciding if I want to spend $30 on a game where the demo bored me after awhile. Maybe the full game is... better?

Yes, it is quite repetitive (as, essentially, most games are). The goal remains always the same to kill everyone or instill fear, however, more elements are added later on to add more complexity overall.

I never read the story events and just took the outcome for what it was.

Later on you have quite some variety on your mates and their skills they bring, together with possible combinations. I thought it was a good pace of new elements, together with the more complex level elements that get added later on, but the gameplay loop stays the same.

I enjoyed it, but would not have paid $30 for it, at a discount of around $20 feels right for me.

I love the game enough to buy it when it was on discount but... there really isn't much to it. I played probably 30 hours on it I think. I started playing Our Adventurer Guild after this game and I'm already at 250 hours

Thanks. I did like what I played. I wishlisted and would definitely consider buying for a discount.

I feel X-Com is one of the best games of this genre and offers so much variety to players to keep their game interesting. Constantly introducing new classes/characters, researching/upgrades, and battles consist of 3-5 different objectives. Though, I could see those getting repetitive for someone eventually. Just not as soon as, say, only 1 objective type haha Thanks for the reply!

Also, the soldier customization is a LOT of fun. Wish they had that for this game. Customizing our pirates (minus the main protagonist) would have been a nice feature and made me enjoy playing my crew a lot more. There's something about molding our characters appearance to our liking, and then when they die... it hurts just a bit more hah

I totally see your point. This is, however, an Indie game. A fun one, but of course it does not compare in any way to the scale of X-COM.

I mainly bought it because I liked the devs previous game, Hard West 2. That game actually provides a lot more variety. If you like Wild (or Weird) West, you could check that out.

Oh, yeah. X-COM definitely has the budget and large team behind it. I keep hoping for another. Great game.

I'll try out Hard West 2!
I do like the game and enjoy the smaller scale tactics, but I much prefer the handcrafted world and maps of Hard West 2.
