how do i capture slime so i can automate?

You need nets to capture.
There is a net per colour, the normal net can only captures the "normal" version of enemies.
You will need to continue to progress through the "town" section before you unlock all of the nets from the shop.

Initially, you need to right click with the equipped net to capture things, later on you will be able to automate the capture just by having the correct net equipped and defeating enemies.
Similarly you will be able to automate the purchase of nets (with a different pet for each).

In the fairies and the foxes zones, you will get access to some quests that are about capturing a relatively large amount of pets, rewarding you with nets of the higher colour tier, giving you access to the last few tiers a bit earlier than through the shop.

when you capture enough normal spiders for level 1, you can activate her passive in the bestiary, which guarantees you automation if you have the net equipped.
