How's the AI now?
Hi, I already own the game but I'm not planning to play it until the single player experience is solid. From Youtube videos, I see that graphics, sounds, etc. are ok now. But, is the AI good? (For reference, I think the Arma AI is pure trash.)

Thanks.

These are all based on eye candy, original Ghost Recon / R6 was very basic physics based as close as possible to real life, then over time they add DLC and mods on top of a already great base game, now it's all about having photo-shoots and dressing up. Today i could install one of the original Tom Clancy games and the game play is superior to these ''milsims''. I am in the same position as you i bought the game early access to support the development as i heard it is the makers of original R6. seems to me all updates are just to catch the eye with no real progress being made towards single player AI

Enemy AI doesn't have realistic movements or reactions, just like in Arma. They seem robotic and at high difficulties and they can take some really impressive shots at you. They can also see in the dark. They are working on all this.

But shooting wise it's still fun and realistic enough for now. It's hard to find this type of milsim challenge from other games.

The enemy AI is pretty tactical. They lean around corners, use cover and they look for you once they lose visual. They listen to the environment and are alerted to your stomps when you run. I've even had AI sneak up behind me.
Thank you. Like I said I already own the game, I'll wait for a better AI.

I hope some brilliant mind eventually finds out a way to make efficient bots, these milsims would benefit greatly.

i bought the game to support it's development as well. It's definitely a long way from the sequel of RVS that it was promised to be. But i believe the promise will be kept.

It's not "eye candy." This isn't Siege. The gear is not there to look pretty. Gear has a purpose in this game. Gear has pros and cons. Weapon length matters in this game. Your weight matters. There is no zoom feature so binos matter. What type of scopes you put on your weapon matters depending on the map. Part of being tactical is choosing the right tools.

When I read through their update notes, I don't really get the impression that things are being added for "eye candy." Especially since they are always saying NO to "eye candy" suggestions on the discussions.

i'm cool with that.

Here's a business idea for video game developers out there: write a reusable, realistic AI library for FPS games, which you can sell to other developers.

The game tells your library what the AI is seeing and what their surroundings are and you reply back to the game what the bot must do next.

Step 1: code
Step 2: profit

:cybereye: That is a good idea. These devs are doing something like that. When they work on their AI for one game, it can be used for a different game.

Right now they are focusing on Warfare1944 bots. But those bots are going to be the foundation for Operation Harsh Doorstop bots.

It's surprising how graphics in video games are photorealistic now while NPCs still behave like stupid animals.

I have gotten used to bad animations in AI. I can ignore that. And I'm kinda bored with "action movie" AI you see in most shooters. (Cover/shoot blindly/change cover/throw grenade/repeat.) What I really want is for the AI to react as a team against me.

If I initiate contact on one side of the map and an enemy AI manages to radio that in, then the enemy AI team should to react to that. They don't have to leave their posts but they should start looking in that general direction and take cover facing that general direction.

There should be an enemy squad leader that coordinates enemy patrols. When he gets these radio warnings, he sends out small teams to suppress and flank the player's last known position. And if you take out this squad leader, the enemy can't coordinate attacks like this.

I'm sure devs already thought about all this stuff and have better ideas. It just takes time. Some things happened in the past that slowed down development and there are a lot of things that need to get done still.

It's not a problem of this particular game, it seems like no software developer in the world is capable of programming a good combat AI in FPS games.

While not perfect, the AI in Ghost Recon (not the Ubi made ones) were able to work out where you were and would often come up behind you and 6 you and you would not know it until it was too late. There were some custom maps that the AI had patrol areas, but once they got wind of you, they were hunting you. Mind you, some of that may have been scripted, but it worked.

We will eventually get AI that acts like humans and reacts in ways one would expect, but that is still in the future. How far is yet to be seen, and then people will complain that the AI is too smart. Bet on it.

Every shooter AI should use the Goal Oriented Action Planning technology developed for the first F.E.A.R. game. Look it up and read up on it. Way ahead of its time and strangely scarce in shooting games.

yeah, that was great, but it was for a single player experience. How would that fare in a coop game which is more complex?
