If you're using CQB sights like the Holosight or Reddot, I suggest putting it maybe in the middle of the rifle. Closer if you feel the reticule is too small, further if you prefer more peripheral vision. All depends on the sight you use. Personally I prefer the Holosight.
For magnified optics though, I suggest putting it closer to you. You'll have a clearer view through the scope that way.
Besides that, I usually put a torch on the side rail, preferrably as close to the muzzle as possible to avoid my gun casting a shadow. I also put the PEQ-15 laser on the top rail, somewhat at the middle-front of the rail.

Picture of my setup.
Note, unless I'm running a dual optic setup, I ALWAYS have backup irons ingame even though it's useless, for now at least. One is none, two is one.
These setups also change depending on if it's a dedicated CQB gun, night op thing, that kind of stuff dictates how it's set up.
For instance if I put a vertical grip closer to the magazine rather than in the center or towards the end of the barrel, would this decrease / increase the overall recoil and handling?
Actually, I don't think so. From what I see, our operators don't even hold the grips we put on our rifles.
I don't think it's functioning properly yet.
