Personally, I prefer this approach over a story campaign.
I read this on the Steam page:
Prefer single-player? Missions with friendly A.I. and a full command system (both in development by industry veteran and A.I. researcher Phil Carlisle) are fully planned.
I thought the word "planned" was a clue. Maybe I will wait for now.
The game has FANTASTIC co-op though. Don't sell yourself short! But for a single player experience there's a lot to be desired
While I think this game has the potential for an excellent, realistic overarching story (if I recall, the original proposed plot for Ground Branch was going to be a counterinsurgency campaign somewhere in Southeast Asia), I can also see the logic behind their current decision.
It makes sense, and it works in the context of military. I know that the team doesn't have the budget or scope to develop an actual cohesive storyline but I would have liked it.
Maybe in an expansion pack a few years from now. That would be perfect.
"GROUND BRANCH’s unique “campaign” format will deliver smaller, more localized sets of missions based around global hotspots, with a centralized intelligence interface to monitor them and receive new mission orders over time. The choices you make along the way may affect future engagements." (source: All Features, Working And Planned[www.groundbranch.com])
