What the current best mod for the game?

Balance mod is a good start. It seems to me to retain the intended flavor of the game, while beefing up the AI quite a bit and removing some of the tech level insanity in stock. It also balances racial picks a bit more - organic and crystalline being more expensive, for example.

At some point I want to try devnull's mod - his mod for SE4 was quite nice as I recall.

I'll have to try that small systems mod, since my latest se5 game seems to crash every time I end my turn.. probably the galaxy is too large.
