Game won't start.
"SteamStartup(0xc,0x0018FE48) failed with error108: the local steam service is not running."

no clue what this means. all my other steam games work. I haven't played this game in 4 years but I'd love to play it again.

I tried http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2275268 but that just gave me a new error message about "range check error" alongside "access violation at address 00475C63 in module 'se5.exe'. read of address 000000EC"

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times still no luck.

I also then tried http://steamcommunity.com/app/1690/discussions/0/34094415886300337/ which didn't fix it either.

Have you installed SE5 and/or Steam in Program Files?

You may want to give yourself "Admin" rights to the folder that Steam is installed in. When you do make sure you set it to apply to all the subfolders and files.

I tried everything listed in the linked threads. so yes. I tried installing the game on root c, I removed read only status for the folders. The program files problem doesn't even apply to my computer because uac is off.

Is there anyway to install this game on steam on an older patch? last time I played was many years ago and it worked fine... If I could install an old version and manually patch from the developers website maybe I could find the version that worked?

IIRC the last time I played was probably on 1.74, so maybe some feature added in 1.77 or .179 that changes the way memory or whatever works? is what breaks it for people on windows7? I've found dozens of posts about this but none of their solutions worked for me..

This error seems to come from the DRM that forbids to run a game without Steam also running, I have no idea why the publisher added it to the Steam version of SE5.

No, Steam doesn't allow using older versions of games.
Also, I doubt that SE5 was released on Steam before the last patch for it was released.
Then SE5 doesn't work well on versions of Windows other than 98 and XP anyway...

so it's all steam's fault eh? shame there isn't wasn't any other way to buy/own this game when I picked it up.

No, it's probably the publisher that didn't put the game on Steam properly?

I also get the Range Check Error. Any fix for this? Ive purchased this game Three times over the years. I think ive purchased the right to play it considering I purchased it again on Steam!

It doesn't matter whose fault it is. This game used to be playable and then it stopped. I too have tried multiple changes in settings with no luck. There's a dozen threads out there on what to tweak to get it to run and I've tried most of them.

Still can't play the game. Can't get a refund on it. This would be fraud under any other system, Steam. It's like I bought a toaster from Walmart and then weeks later Walmart came and stole it from my house.

It's seriously made me rethink the ease and convenience factor of a cloud service delivering games when they can come down the line later and deliver some sort of DRM that renders the product inoperable.

It was my understanding that these issues have been present since the game was put on Steam??
