There is currently no Ranked mode but there are files in the game that indicate it's either coming soon or it was planned at some point, not sure which. If it's the former, I'm personally fine with it. Gives me time to check out the offline modes before I go for Ranked.
The two modes are essentially the same, one just pairs you randomly with another player whilst another lets you create a room and another player can join. You can put a password on the room to only allow your friends to join. Unfortunately you can only have 2 people in a lobby, there are no spectators.
If you're asking about netcode though? Its delay based, so your mileage will vary depending on the quality of your internet, and whether you're on ethernet or Wi Fi, the latter you'll probably suffer a lot trying to play the game online with anyone that isn't next door pretty much.
But, having played it a bit now with people across the country, east to west coast, its pretty good. Even two bar connections are easily playable, noticeable delay but not by a ton. Very good with those who have even better conections.
All in all, its definitely a situation where you probably wanna wait in general though to see if the game gets some patches for the various poorly optimized elements of the game, as you could be one of the unlucky ones who ends up with a game that barely runs before they start putting out some patches/hotfixes really.
