I think it depends on how far you are into the game. More items unlock in the shop later on. Once you get the ability to Akihabara you can also buy a ton more video games there and redeem prizes.

DVD player is available immediately, the console opens up a couple of months in. Don't remember exactly when now, just check back after each major story arc concludes.
