agreed. didnt think about the showtime, but she was the first love interest you have an actual interaction with (ye, ann is picked up in front of you first, but that was more a setup for ryuji than an intro to ann). nvm the first one you meet in the intro. and, i dunno, she really just feels like the only one with a proactive interest in the MC. also, and maybe this is just me, but the fact you cant romance her until the very end of the game makes it feel more natural because in my first playthrough i romance ann pretty early, and dialogue always felt oddly unnatural with that relationship never being acknowledged in any way during the playthrough. something neatly circumvented by romancing only sumire.

Kasumi is an odd one here because her story didn't exist in the original game. She was added as a Royal exclusive, meaning you can't call her canon without dismissing the rest as meaningless. On the other hand, she does have a special something the others don't, including but not limited to her own showtime with Ren as well as being the only one who confesses to him. She's also the only one who, while does rely on Ren's help, actually tries to sort her things out before jumping in to join the gang, This makes her surprisingly similar to Miranda from Mass Effect 2, since both have limited interaction with the MC, but when they do find the time, it's very meaningful.

That said, I still say there's no canon romance in P5, it's left to the people playing it.

Kasumi, Marie and Aigis are explicitly written to have romantic chemistry with the protagonist, and it's portrayed extremely well without forcing it. The romantic sparks just come in their characterization and how they were written, not because they're playing favorites and making her be liked just because she is. (i.e. they're all unable to find their humanity that makes them stick out, but they decide to rebel and carve a path of their own for it, hence the romantic undertones.)

It's just that these characters are romantic interests in terms of >character<, not as a >game mechanic<, so you can still ignore them when you want to romance anyone of your own volition (Kawakami canon tho.) So that's how all of these characters can be considered "canon interests" without actually having to appear in vanilla and overwrite the entire romance mechanic. So both Kasumi and Akechi in the game give you this freedom to ignore them if you just so happen to not like or understand them, or if you simply care about other characters more.

Aigis is a mascot character in vanilla P3 but she doubles as romantic interest due to the additional SL. So Teddie and Morgana are both stuck in this awkward niche. They're also mistakenly compared to Koromaru because they're all animal companions, but Koromaru is moreso related to Nanako; Aigis playing two completely different character archetypes makes the situation worse, so it's hard to accurately compare Koro to Aigis.

In the original Persona 5, it was all optional which love interest you chose because it doesn’t change the story in the long term. (Expect if you decide to date multiple people). I will say that Ann has the lovers arcana. Which would indicate if Joker WERE to have a canon relationship that Ann would be it. Futaba is the only relationship I don’t agree with because they have a young sister and big brother vibes going on. Sojiro taking care of them both makes them like siblings. Makoto is probably the 2nd most canon in the original series. Now with Persona 5 Royal, Sumire (renamed herself Kasumi) is introduced. For me personally I still don’t see it. Ann and Joker just have more chemistry. They met from the very beginning. It’s a slower process but when you do finally work towards a relationship with Ann it pays off. It feels the most organic and meaningful relationship that Joker has. Although if you do ship any of the other ships I do want to emphasize the fact all relationships are canon and aren’t at the same time. It’s up you and your preference while playing the game. The sequel of Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal, which is Persona Strikers does not carry any relationship storylines from the previous game.

Persona 5 Strikers isn't a straight up sequel, it's more a spin-off than anything else for multiple reasons (totally different gameplay, Kasumi and Akechi's absence and other thins).
I also disagree with Makoto or Ann being more canon, partly because some of the characters were demoted from party members to confidants due to time and budget constraints I hear. I'll never forgive them for doing that to Hifumi.

Lovers Arcana has nothing to do with romance. The Lovers Arcana represents diverging paths and needing to make a decision in your life. Stick to your moral core or take the easy way out.

I don't think there is a canon love interest. Which is good, there doesn't seem to be anyone to guilt me when I friendzone them. My headcanon is he focuses on school that semester and doubles back around to Futaba when she's had some time to grow and process in like a year or two. So that leaves me to not need a love interest. And then I make a mistake and now I'm banging my teacher.
