Is her name Sumire or Smile?
In the Japanese alphabet the only letter that can be written alone are the vowels and n, when is needed to write words like "in" it's written with an "u" in the end, so reading literally is "inu" but truly is "in", a example are the names Inosuke and Sasuke, that are readen like Saske and Inoske, and doesn't have L or V in the Japanese alphabet it's switched L for R and V for B.

So, using these rules we delete the "u" from Sumire's name and switch the R for L and the name "Sumire" can be readen like "Smile".

The question is for call her as Sumire or Smile?

PS: Sorry for any gramatical error i am not fluent in english.

You got a few ideas wrong here. Yes, when adapting a foreign name to japanese, usually L becomes R and V becomes B, but the other way around is not always true.

Her name in japanese is written as 芳澤 すみれ. 芳澤 reads as Yoshizawa, すみれ reads as Sumire (す su, み mi, れ re) so it is originally a R sound.

About omitting the U, I get what you mean with Sasuke and Inosuke, but in her case the U is not absent, I personally can't tell if there is any rule, but the pronunciation used in the japanese dub is Sumire.

They are not the same, Sasuke uses the small "su" which puts enfasis in the S sound making the U almost silent while Sumire uses the regular "su" which is pronounced as is.

It is confusing since you have it translated to roman letters but the spelling is different.

Smile would be su-mai-ru and written in katakana, not su-mi-re written in kanji/hiragana.

Sumire is a fairly common Japanese female name.
