First rule to play choice matter RPG : Save the game as much as you can.
Second rule : Save in multiple data slots.

I know but the game simply pulls you into it so much that you forget about it

Save in multiple data slots? Thats not a rule wtf.
First time playing a JRPG? It's almost a Standard they won't have Autosave. Also 4 hours and no safe often? This isn't a console where you have no memory card....

To be fair it isn't common in 2022 to have no autosave.

It's not that uncommon.

If you ever relied on auto save in this game, you could easily end up being cornered or stuck with a social choice you regret. Saving before taking vital decisions is recommended.

Just an example.
Imagine: You spent all your money on equipment, and now you can't afford another thing you really need/want to get the wanted outcome of a choice.

Auto save would not let you do that, although a few games have 2 auto save slots it alternates between, but in this game, that would not be nowhere enough to let you redo choices you regret.

Sometimes I wish games like this had an auto save. Being forced through multiple boss fights, or large stretches of a palace without being allowed to save, just to have the game crash after you almost finished all of it can be soul crushing.
I just went through one of the few lategame sections where you can't save between multiple fights and cutscenes. When the game got stuck on a text box for 5 seconds I already resigned myself to the crash literal seconds before I could finally save. Thankfully, it didn't actually crash, but this is just 1 of those examples why auto saves should at least be an option in these games.

If you have Multi Choice and dont want to have to replay the game over and over just to get different results it is.

Also if you have ever played a RPG that takes over 20 hours to beat, and have ever experienced have a Save Slot/Data Corruption, then it very much becomes Rule Number One for you going forward.

I'm a compulsive multi-save slot haver after like Final Fantasy VI on the SNES where I messed up at the age of 10 and got stuck at a spot where I couldn't advance or retreat without dying so had to start from scratch.

In this game, with the whole time management thing, I just keep a save per in game day for two weeks, so 14 of the 16 slots they give you.

you really think enchanted japanese game artisans are going to include a western smooth brain feature like auto save just to anticipate software failure?

Yeah. They could definitely keep the manual save system while having an autosave checkpoint system, and I've seen games do that in the past.

They could, its just never a good idea to rely on them, and this is why. I think all of us learned this at some point. Heck I learned back in the day to not buy 3rd Party Memory Cards because a large chunk of it became Corrupted, and man did that hurt.
