Does this game save on exit / auto saves?
I'm enjoying the game now i seem to have fixed the performance issues. But man alive it's very frustrating the lack of opportunities to save. Life sometimes / often gets in the way and you need to exit, but it seems the game can go 30+ mins without giving you any option to save.

ahh bugger, frustraiting then that you can't save in dungeons. Games havn't been mostly for children and teenagers for some time, it's a shame P5 dosn't seem to realise that.
You can save in dungeons, by going back to entrance or find safe room scattered around in dungeon.

As mentioned above, you can save in dungeons. Safe rooms is the doors that is slightly transparent. This is where you can apply some power ups too. If you are referring to Mementos, there is also safe zones, in forms of subway waiting rooms.

in that case hopefully the start of the game is just very hand holding, as it seems to take forever to get to a point where you can save.

Persona 5 is one of the few games in which you are required to save manually. There is no autosaving whatsoever. This also applies to Persona 4 and assuming this will also apply to Persona 3 when it launches on Steam in 2023.

That is correct. It takes a while for you to be able to save and in dungeons you can only save in safe rooms/safe zones/start area of dungeons. As for elsewhere, it depends if an auto event is in play or not.

When you get freed from the hand holding, you can often save in the school, Leblanc, streets and such.

Id maybe reccomend having a backup save for a game like this and keeping it up to date just in case since losing a huge chunk of progress of potentially hours worth sucks badly. + a backup save is always nice just to ♥♥♥♥♥♥ yourself if you maybe are struggling with a calling card boss fight or something like that.
