Do you consider this a visual novel, visual novel hybrid, jrpg or something inbetween?
I keep seeing people say this is a visual novel or visual novel hybrid. I don't consider it one seeing as it has very little of what makes visual novels, visual novels. The closest thing it has to being a visual novel is dialogue and that's about it, from my perspective at least, and I am someone who is making a visual novel.

But I was wondering what everyone else's opinion on it is. So what do you guys consider it to be?

Without exception.

All (games) which tell a story, are visual novels, with added mechanics to fill gaps in the telling of said story. The genre does not matter.

Chess tells no actual story hence, it is a "true" game.

These facts, not opinions will stand the test of time.

nah. It's not how it works. people usually label something based on what is the main thing you do in a game. basically what the game is providing for you 90% of the time you are playing it, even if it has some other content also on the side.

For example if in a game you are driving a car 90% of the time you are playing the game, even if it provides story bits, it's a driving game. If you are shooting stuff most of the time, it's a shooter. So in Persona you are advancing dialogues and picking answers as in any Visual Novel 90 hours out of 100, then of course people can call it a visual novel even if it provides other things too as a bonus. These labels don't mean anything else than signaling to players what they can expect to do most of the time when they pick the game up. And that's what they will do in Persona.

It's not some insult, like some people think it is around here, and they throw a hissy fit for ridiculous reasons :P

You are wrong, it's ok to be so.

it's a jrpg / dating sim lol. all the time management and social stat building business is pretty staple of dating sims. though the confusion is understandable because there's indeed some overlap between dating sims and visual novels, especially before the VN genre was fully fleshed out.

Fair enough. I'm totally fine with you disagreeing with me, we play the same game. I can also understand that people might label something based on what has more of an impact on their personal game experience, rather than what the game is roughly providing through a lengthy play session such as this one.

Coincidentally for me the most impact on the game experience is the visual novel part which frankly is by far what the game provides through most of the playthrough. And as a pure RPG I feel like it's lacking quite a number of things which even indie RPG maker jrpg games have, such as world exploration among other things.

But that being said, if for you the jrpg part feels more impactful and the visual novel type of dialogue based game parts are less important when you define your game experience, than absolutely, it's a great JRPG in that case.

So, Halo and call of duty campaigns are visual novels? Just checking, what exactly is your definition of a visual novel? Is a visual novel to you, "A game which tells a story"?

I think what lead to all this kind of confusion is when Steam started letting the Community set Tags. Even if a Developer never said their Game was X Genre the Community could just decide to slap a Tag on it. Even though none of the Devs ever said Persona was a VN some Players have decided it is. In the end its up to each person to decide, but I just go with what the Devs say it is myself. After all they made it.

Its just a jrpg. With how weirdly some people try to classify stuff im sure there are some who will somehow think its a fps. Sorta like with music you can be listening to Ramstein and there is always that one person who will be like "Ahcktually it isnt metal its sub-blind core historic 1.5 Metal" and you are just like "bruh, its metal. stop it."

If you take out all the fighting/puzzles, you are left with chats and npc interactions like a kinetic VN, the fact it has different endings just means it's not kinetic, but is still a VN with extra mechanics.

Chess "tells no story", it is just a game. mechanics only.

I understand your confusion.

Is WAY better than any talk simulator aka visual novel.

Ok, but by that logic, take out all of the talking and you are left with combat and puzzles. And yes I know the difference between a kinetic novel and visual novel, I am making a visual novel right now.

Ok see what you mean about chess, but it does kind of tell a story when you think about it. It is meant to be about two kingdoms fighting, at least that's always what I thought it was about. But you could say it is just a simulation game with no story which makes sense.

You do know that not all visual novels have sex scenes or hentai right?
