Personally I would have much rather either just have paid more for a full game (not that this isnt a full game I mean chapter 1+2) or have the game be in early access till chapter 2 releases.
It's a nitpick ofc but having this be 2 games or game + dlc feels weird given the nature of the game and is making me hesitant to get this.
You're certainly welcome to hold off! No rush to buy at launch.
I just didn't feel it was a good fit for the Early Access model. CULTIC is a polished and feature-complete product - not missing major features, weapons, enemies, etc.
Breaking the game into episodes means that I can work within a reasonable scope for a solo project, and still be able to deliver playable products in a reasonable time-frame. Revenue from the initial release lets me keep paying my bills, and the feedback allows me to guide the development of the next chapter.
There's overlap between Early Access and episodic releases, for sure, but participating in the Early Access program didn't feel like a good fit for the development of CULTIC.
I honestly really appreciate this approach. It's also funny considering this is a retro-style shooter, and all shooters of yesteryear were released this exact same way. Kind of feels like a complete experience, and I'm feeling all nostalgic over it. I'll look forward to being able to purchase Chapter Two when it releases.
I mean other companies do it.
I have most of 3D Realms games, even WRATH (for over 3 years in early access now).
I demand nothing, I am just suggesting...
I just beat your game and it's the most fun I've had in a horror FPS since Ravenholm in Half-Life 2.
I don't say that lightly since Half-Life 2 is one of my all time favorite games and Ravenholm is the highlight imo. DLC, another chapter whatever, I'm buying it on day one. Great job!
I am happy that such brilliant, old-fashioned games still come up and I will gladly pay for whatever 'next chapters' are announced.
I would most certainly prefer them to be paid DLC, as - I suppose - that would make them appear much faster than "standalone titles".
There is also nothing wrong at all with Cultic's engine/looks/etc, so I do not feel any need to "make a new game from the ground".
+1
I was wondering the same thing about how episode 2 would release and why the game was released this way, and my questions are now answered. My only remaining question is: How many episodes are you planning on making?
Not really. You got the first episode for free as shareware. Then if you bought the full game you got 3-4 complete episodes of 8-12 levels each. This is more like buy the shareware, then buy each episode sold separately if and when it comes out. Which is still way better than "pay for it all up front and cross your fingers that the full game ever gets released."
Don't get me wrong I'm not crapping on Cultic. But games like Wrath -- I don't understand it. It's taken them YEARS and they still haven't come out with a full game, and they are basically making a map pack for a pre-existing engine. Id software was a tiny team back then and managed to code the engine from scratch and release a full, multi-episode game.
I'm just against the EA program in general because it has conditioned people to pay for an incomplete product that may never materialize, and to accept that it takes years and years to release what amounts to a map pack for the game that they've already paid for.
