Arcade is what you want to reach a higher speed
As the game just released, it's possible that there will be tweaks after gathering our feedback
If the simulation is off, then I think they should try to re-balance it and just reset the leaderboards. OFc I haven't used the race mode yet so I'm not one to care about the leaderboards atm :p Split it in two might be another option.
Maybe as it's not an early access title I guess there might be some hesitation due to that as well?
The game states that Arcade is for racing, which to me was counter intuitive, would have thought you'd choose simulation for racing.
I'd recommend keeping the simulation mode off if you want to have some speed when going around. I'd love to offer to make the slider of forward force go higher but I do worry about competitive integrity obviously so I'm not sure how easily we can do that. Do you also feel like you're too slow on arcade mode or is it a simulation mode problem?
I am a bit confused as to why the two seem so different in speed. Given racing/leaderboards don't care about which mode you are in and arcade mode is much faster, but still feels realistic, I really struggle to see why I would use simulation mode now. I initially went to it straight away assuming it would be more realistic as I also use controllers on a pole.
We put the simulation mode in because in the arcade mode you can basically keep building up speed when in reality at certain speeds you'd start slowing yourself down just by putting your paddle in the water because you can't match the speed of the stroke to the speed you're already going at. The simulation mode's tempo is lower to feel a bit more authentic and slower so if you're in free ride and just want to take your time the option's there.
We'll keep thinking about how to word these things though and to potentially warn users who start racing with simulation mode on. We hoped the hover-over warning would be enough but maybe it's a bit too confusing still!
(I should add, afaik. I haven't tried arcade mode a lot)

How can this guy go so fast?? It's impossible. The Kayak doesn't seem to have as much drag either..
Do you have simulation mode on? With that on it's definitely impossible to get speeds this fast. If you are on arcade mode we're thinking about having the dev who recorded those video's show off better how to reach these speeds but it's mostly just deep fast strokes through the water.
I also haven't seen any other videos where someone was going that fast.
