Wait for the modders . I purchased this game for the steam locomotives. I worked on the railways in the 1960’s when there was still 50% steam. Steam locomotives are alive, they breathe and there is something about them that diesels lack. I know it is only a game, but a short line railway such as depicted probably could not justify the purchase of a diesel.

I'd like to see Alco RS1 and RS3s, as they are perfect locomotives for the game. I'd also be very pleased to switch my passenger opperations over to Budd RDCs.

We shouldn't have to wait for modders just because you used to work the railways in the 1960's and steam locomotives are your personal preference. Steam locomotives are represented just fine in this game already. An overabundance compared to diesel. We only have one main line loco and one switcher/yard loco. So now it's time for some diesel love for those of us who prefer that.

Besides, you just said in the 60's there was still 50% steam, so that means there was 50% diesel and the amount of diesel locomotives in this game is way less than 50%. So how about we get equal representation and the devs focus on more diesel locomotives and you rely on modders for more steam?

Are we supposed to only ever have 2 to choose from while the devs give you get 10 more, 20 more steam locos? Don't be greedy!

I second the early RSs. Also some RSDs.

Relax. The dude just mentioned his love for steam. Plus isn't the game based in the 40s and therefore would likely be a higher percentage of steam in operation vs diesel?

Pretty sure saying "wait for modders if you want diesels" is a bit more than just saying he likes steam locomotives. shrug

Based on the fact that we have GP9s in the game, I'm pretty sure it's set in the mid-50s during the transition era at the earliest.

A relatively short line like this would have run every engine they had into the ground and would have only purchased other lines' cast-offs. So it is unlikely they would have brought in diesels until they could no longer source reasonably reliable steam locos.

This was the era when these sorts of lines were struggling to keep hold of their customers as trucks became more widespread and owner operators wanted that freight and could offer good door-to-door deliveries. Passenger numbers were falling rapidly as more and more families found means to buy a car with it's obvious attraction of travelling when YOU want rather than adhere to someone else's schedule, not have to wait in stations or sit in a coach with lots of people you don't know and then have to find a way to get where you wanted to go after stepping off the train.

Since the era is supposedly 40s-50s, RS3, F7, GP7/9, SW1/7, NW2, and maybe a H-16-44 would be the most appropriate, based on Southern Railway's locomotive roster.

And that's what went wrong in the world! People didn't wanna talk to the stranger sitting next to them on the train anymore! Lol

As I said earlier though, lines like this were the real last bastions of steam, the larger companies went for dieselisation and cascaded their steam locos down to small branch lines and spurs, the whole process being completed in not much more than a decade. Many a proud express passenger loco found itself relegated to running local freights down backwoods lines.. 10 years later and the branch would have been mainly, if not completely, diesels.

All I did was make a point as to which diesels would be appropriate for this line/era. Everyone is going to play the game how they wish; some will be happy with only steam, some want only diesel and some will want a mix of both. Having a large selection of both steam & diesel engines available wouldn't be a bad thing, but right now there's only 2 diesel models available. And while the Murphy Branch may have been constructed in the 'backwoods', it certainly was not a 'backwoods line'.

It's early access, I'm sure they are creating/purchasing additional diesel locomotive assets appropriate to the era they have set the game in. Given the amount of motive power in the game already I don't know that it is a priority unless they have a dedicated modeler on the development team who's sole job is modeling new locomotives (assuming they are not purchasing the models from other sources).
