Finding Abandoned Locomotives: Feature or Fan Narrative?
I'm a huge fan of the game and have put in several hundred hours now. The Discord is pretty robust and lively, with Rolling Stock Suggestions and the Bryson Gallery being my favorite spots. Said gallery also had recurring stories, told in-universe, of players traveling down new sections of line and finding damaged/derailed engines lying there abandoned, which were then hauled to the nearest Engine Repair Shed. One such post could be dismissed as an enterprising player creating a story, but three or four afterwards got me curious. I've since tried going up Walker Logging and down the main line past Robinson, but have found nothing myself. I was unsure where to pose this question, so here goes: is finding an abandoned engine in game an actual feature, or just a fun little bit of world-building?

So far, I think it was only a start-of-game tutorial...

IMO it's part of the tutorial to show you how to rerail and how to set up your engine service. Don't expect other hidden engines.

Yeah, me too. Though I think it'd be a pretty neat feature.

Even if it was just the lower-end / starter locomotives, yeah it'd be cool to occasionally come across one... that tutorial did kinda set an expectation for me at first.

I don't know about found locomotives, but quite a few people would like to see a used engine/rolling stock market.

Hmm, like you buy it broken down at a steep discount, and have to drag it to repairs? Yeah that'd be cool too, almost the same effect.

That would be how Railroads such as operated the Murphy branch worked in rl. Buy retired or broken down (but repairable) steam locos and keep them running.
As the big players reduced their steam fleets in favour of diesel power small companies would grab the discards rather than spend a fortune, that they didn't have, on new diesels.

Yep, would also add some replay-ability as each play through you wouldn't be guaranteed to get access to the same engines. Give some more usability to the mechanics which honestly the one thing this game kinda of needs more is expenses. I think on my save I'm making 15k a day and at max loan I have an interest payment of 8k every 5 days.
