Why steam engines are so slow?
Question is simple no matter what steam engines in my exp you buy max speed on level ground is the same... while diesel go over 40 ( steam around 16 )
Wouldnt be logical if stronger steam locomotive have a bit of edge in speed as well.. for example each steam engine have 2 mph advantage as well as pulling str ,, for me drivin smallest steam and the best steam engine is the same, coz of max speed limit. and then you switch to diesel and this thing fly like rocket in few sec make 40 no matter how many carts they pull... bit dumb,

Perhaps you are not using the reverser (regulator) correctly. As you build up speed, move the reverser toward the center bit by bit and you should see your speed increase.
The speed of the locos is governed by the track and the diameter of its wheels. The game is based on the Murphy Branch which was built between 1880 and 1891 using convict labour. The area is hills and mountains meaning there is a lot of curves and grades. This limits the speed at with a train can travel. Freight trains generally do not travel fast owing to the weight generally hauled and most freight is not time critical. The only way you will get a higher speed from a locomotive is if you have a long straight stretch of track, which the Murphy Branch does not have. Additionally locomotive top speed is governed by the diameter of the driving wheels. Freight locomotives have smaller wheels giving them more torque whereas passenger locomotives have larger wheels for more speed.

While what you have said is true, if the OP is only seeing a max of 16 mph with steam engines, then it would appear that he isn't operating them correctly. All locomotives, steam or diesel, should be capable of running the speed limits of the line when not pulling an excessive load.

No matter what i do my speed limit with steam engines are app same, ("Perhaps you are not using the reverser (regulator)" where is that .. i like playing game from 3 person not in a steam engine cabin)

That is the F/R slider, it sounds a bit counter intuitive. As you start picking up a speed a bit, move that closer to the center of the slider (not to neutral) and you will start to increase speed.

ty for the info
The best way to find the ultimate position for the reverser is to put the loco under AI control and see in which position the AI places it in. This should give you a guide to where to position it.
the farther the johnson bar is from center the more torque you have. Then once you pull it towards center to go faster. It is how the steam valves work to the piston (put very simply)
