Railroader
The noise ! The noise ! Make it stop !!!!!
The latest update has obviously come with a pay bonus for the AI drivers based on how much they use the train whistle, any hint of a switch or a station or a crossing or a tree or another train or a cloud that looks like something and they lay on the whistle like unused whistle is going to be taxed starting tomorrow.

No thank you.

They'd be laying on the bell too except the devs were kind enough to give us a volume slider for the bell. Any chance we could have one for the whistle as well ?

The Engine slider (Preferences/Sound) controls the volume of the whistle/horn.

I don't want to turn off all the engine sounds. I might as well just play the game with the sound turned completely off.

I must second grolbu.

FRA 222 rule compliant 110 decibel whistles and horns are in a different league than low pitched 80-90 decibel engines chuffs and rumbles. The residents of Ela are sending Sir Toppemhat nastygrams daily and petitioning to enact a quiet zone, the editor of the Whittier newspaper is on the warpath, and the local unions are filing hearing disability lawsuits and threatening a strike over this issue.

The AI will constantly be updated and looked at, including your current point, will also look at the slider request for the bell.

Even though I haven't used AI, I guess the main question is, why was it determined that the whistle volume for the AI be so loud? Just turn it down within the programming code.

It uses the same "volume" as the players engines do. Those settings don't change because it is an AI or not an AI.

We would very much like to address this issue.

For all here: We would like to know where these issues are the worst, where we could fix and address this issue. Like specific situations, I mean.
I use the AI for a passenger train, trying to keep it moving from station to station as much as possible. I used to have the Engine volume at 80. I now have it at 15. It seems there are a lot of road crossings near stations. Part of the problem is that the horn starts at the whistlepost even when going slower - therefor it is often the case that the whistle sequence needs to happen twice as the first sequence finishes well before the crossing. And heaven forbid that the fusee is just on the other side of a crossing.

Yep, I'm still just in Ela - Whittier, 1 loco, 1 coach & 1 obs car doing passengers.
Whittier fusee is just after crossing on sawmill side of station, every time the whistle sequence triggers twice. I have no issues with any other crossings. . . yet :)

there is a stretch of rail where the road crosses back and forth near marker 63 & 62 is awful in a diesel

I first found out about it when an AI driver took a diesel switcher from the Silva interchange down through the industrial area towards Silva station at 20 mph. The horn and bell seemed to be almost continuous all the way through the area.

While the idea of an automatic horn/whistle blow in AI is nice, in my less than humble opinion, (unlike the FRA who uses thousands of nonsensical mumbo jumbo words to dispel my notions with a glory seeking, power hungry despot on a vendetta against me and my ramshackle operation because I fail to cower and bow) there are simply too many variables for a magic formula/one size fits all for such a rigid "horn rule". Speed, accelerating or decelerating, direction of pull or shove, car count, etc etc etc. Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything mind you.

If people like it as is in the game, great. Knock yourself out. Please remember there are some of us who prefer listening to wildlife....flanges chirping, steam engines barking, and engines purring.

Dare I say it? I dare. There is one thing AI doesn't have and is of insufficient quantity in a few people. That scarcest resource of all...common sense.

It's a great game but PLEASE let us have a choice. I use AI extensively in Ela and Whittier running multiple switch jobs simultaneously. It sounds like Whistlefest.

Perhaps a separate volume panel for AI.

When I usually use AI it is for unattended passenger run and you don't hear the sounds of that engine. But sometimes I do follow and it is usually not too loud because I tend to hover vertically and the sound dissipates the further you are from the engine.

If I am running the engine the sound never bothers me. Of course the Generator or Dynamo is very low in my setup. :)
Shift+H will give you the higher volume that the AI uses. Switching between H & H+Shift gives weight to some the multi-chime (or tone) whistles.
