Question concerning XP
Since scanning stuff gives XP, and using "advantageous" dialogue options lets me get through quicker, I get less XP for using the "better" way.
Example car garage: I can use Psychology 2 to make the guy open the locker right away.
If I don't have any of that, I have to scan stuff all over the garage to confront him, which in the end nets me around 50 XP more - as much as I get for solving this case.
Is that intentional to slow down leveling? If not I think I should get as many XP for jumping straight to the interesting part as I would get for scanning everything.

Also, I couldn't detect any difference in XP between shooting a perp the regular way and crits - both yield 5 XP. This means the only reason I should ever go for crits is ammo conservation.

Psychology Level 6 gives you 2x Public Trust Points.
If you don't know which answer is the right one, you perhaps get none at all?

If you know for sure, please tell us. Would be nice to to know.

About crits: I don't know how difficult your playthrough was, but if you are against 4-6 enemies in a game where you can't shoot from cover then it is nice if you can drop them faster or you'll just die.
Focus 6 doubles crit damage, should be even better then.

But really, not headshoting these guys is like shooting yourself in the foot.

True, I'm playing on Hard and minimizing the potential lead exposure time is also a good point.

You're looking at it from the wrong perspective. You get more XP for doing extra steps, not losing XP for going the easy way.

It's not the easy way though since I already had to spend skill points to even get that option.
And then it wouldn't make sense to spend skill points in the first place.

You spent XP to unlock the easy way, so you get to use that instead of doing extra work, for which you get rewarded extra XP. I see no issue here, it's well balanced.
