I'm getting super low fps and bad stuttering.

I started up the game and even on the main menu I move the mouse and it's stuttering and is very delayed plus my fps is as low as 10-15 fps. What is up with this game?

All I did was bring up the steam overlay then removed it and boom the game is fine. very strange but I'm happy now.

I disabled the steam overlay completely and it helped a lot including stopped the periodic crash.

alt tabbing worked for me, plus i set the video to windowed fullscreen.. works flawless now

The game apparently compiles shaders in the background when it first launches and doesn't tell you, making the main menu very laggy and the framerate really low for a few minutes. If this was your first time running the game, that's probably the reason and it may've been a coincidence that you disabled the steam overlay at the same time that it was finishing up.

game compiles shaders when it starts the first time, its how UE works, has nothing to do with steam overlay, just wait a little bit

Yep, the devs really should've included a message for this (most games that pre-compile shaders do).

Yeah, shader pre-compilation was missing in the original demo and then added in a rush. Hence, lack of a message.

Yeah I loaded it up first time yesterday now and when I went on the game on like the 3rd or 4th load up, I just randomly displayed the steam overlay then removed it and then I was like what the fps is fine and no stuttering etc. I thought that was weird haha.

The steam overlay sorted my issue out. I did the alt + tab AFTER so I dunno if it would of worked now
