Research not being conducted (early game)
I am still learning the basics (I have about 3 hours mostly replying the intro tutorials), but I can't get my gaters to work on research.

I have a team of scientists that go through the gate and another team for home research. I've selected a new research focus (the medbay), but the scientists from the home team never seem to sit down at the research desk. Patent writing and bio sample study works.

Research Desk has minimal level requirement to use (green bubble in top right when in the building menu, in this case it should say 2), there's a couple of equipment pieces in the game that are like that, you not only need appropriate Gater for it, but they need to be level 2 or 3 to use it.

Do multiple Research Stations speed up the process?
I have two of them, it does not seem to make any difference.

Honestly, no idea, I build two of them as a reflex. If nothing else, it keeps the Research going when one person wanders away to satisfy their needs.

So both of your stations get used, at one time or another?

Both can be in use, depending on how many Scientist are actually back in base and if they're busy with patents (I tend to keep two stay-at-base Patent Writers), I think it makes it faster, but I never really measured it.

Yes, but only when manned. Having multiple stations but nobody using them is pointless. The same is true of patent tables.
