So to use this pic as a guide: blue single space areas are generators. green area is where i put the soldiers. bugs split up left and right when they exit and then the ones that go right split up again as the go up. soldiers only have to fight a small number and kill easy then pick off remaining one at a time. The double blue area is just hallway. You can put the gun racks there and a couple more soldiers when more advanced attacks happen.
Build your generator room as far away as possible from the gate, place your soldiers right infront of it and make sure to leave a walk way between each 6x2 generator block. That way your units can clear the room faster and less generators blow up
If you get to the point of making exosuits, putting some of your soldiers in exosuits (even light ones) seems to help them survive.
I also tend to keep several rows of "trash" (level 1) generators near the entrance, and sprinkled around the bigger generators, to lessen the chance a bug sets its sights on the more expensive generators.
