Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization

Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization

The problems with this title vs original Colonization:
It just doesn't have the right vibe or feeling as the original colonization. In the original, you were (at least in my games) mostly alone, for a good long while. Natives weren't beating at your door the first second of gameplay. There was plenty of space to build and defend colonies. The major nations weren't bunched up together fighting over every little scrap of space. In Civ 4, no matter where you go, continent or caribbean, you are swamped with natives and the other european nations. Your room to grow is hampered because for some reason your colonies just don't grow as fast as those of your european brothers. Could this be as a result of mismanagment? Well, Im playing the game the way I played in the original, and it is not working.

When things do eventually get aggressive the RNG seems to be a bit.. off. The AI seems way more powerful than I could ever be. All in all, it's not the original colonization experience, and even with tweaking, I don't think it ever will.

I enjoy the new one, and I didn't have a negative experience with the things you mentioned.

The base game of this new version is good, but not great. The Religion and Revolution mod makes it great, and better than the original I dare say. I play more of this game (with the mod) than I do Civilization V. Can't go back to Civ 5 after playing this. The economy aspect is just too addicting.

And if like me you are really not into the war aspect or competing with other colonies, the worldbuilder cheat is right there always available to make adjustments as you deem fit. Create obstacles for yourself, purposefully create challenges as you go, or cheat in your favor. It really is a great sandbox to play in.

I agree, this version doesn't suck me in the way the original did. I still play the original more than this one!

I like this game, except the pace seems really cranked up, in the original I did not feel rushed in this one it 1600 then the next second I am like HOLY CRAP it is 1750 already!

Play Religion and Revolution. Make the world Gigantic. Make the speed Marathon. Turn off sea creatures. Be prepaired to have lots of fun!!
I dislike the default speed here. It's all so fast that you have not enough time to level up your troops vs the natives and such, or to do just about anything else. Better play epic/maraton
Also the default game-speed pretty much forces you to not generate any bells until the end of the game where you instantly go 0->50% sentiment in 10-20 turns. It's just too much of a penalty to generate bells before this.

There is also another problem that when you have like 3-4 cities with 20 population plus a big army on top of it, you can't get the 50% bells. You HAVE to start 3-4 4-pop-cities with 1 farmer/fisherman and 3 statesmen just to get enough bells generation... Because total bells does not matter, it's only the bell generation... So broken imo.
On epic and marathon you don't have this problem. Also founding fathers won't help you out, 9 statesmen is just not enough.

Game music is worse than the original colonization's music.

The European AI is kinda lame. Also if they settle their base right next to mine (like literally right next to it) I can't attack them for the first 20 turns in the game... Aside from having to build 1-2 warships they never bother me and I can wipe them out whenever I feel like it after the first 20 turns.

There are indians EVERYWHERE. You are almost forced to kill at least one tribe entirely on higher difficulties. Sometimes I can only settle maybe 1-2 cities before they get annoyed with me. So I might as well just wipe them out completely.
BUT, if I wipe them out too fast, they only award like 100 gold per village... So I gotta wait like a 100+ turns if possible and then they award around 500-3000 gold for more or less the same efford... While keeping them happy. This is kinda lame.

The final revolution is kind of a joke. Sometimes I can get all of their warships to suicide on mine. Like I have 4 warships (with some experience + spanish rebel sentiment bonus), he has 12+ man o wars, but I win somehow.. And I only end up fighting maybe half his army because when he runs out of ships, he loses.

When I destroy all of the kings ships but one, then I may run out of turns to kill him quickly enough because he only has 1 ship to transfer units + he uses that ship to bombard 1-2 settlements in between... That's so broken. Never happened to me though.

All I gotta do is put units near my villages on hills+forests and the king will attack me from the sea instead (it can't find a spot to land. There are many more cheese-tactics. Or starting a lot of villages just before the independence and then take the +2 people per town. Then give them guns and you got an army twice the size the king has. And many other totally imbalanced strategies.

Yeah you should play The Religion & Revolution
I tried it. Darn.. TAC is like... SO MUCH BETTER than the vanilla... Should just add it to the original game. It really fixes all those silly annoyances and makes the game a lot harder.

And Religion & Revolution mod is a pre-TAC Mod, it includes everything from TAC and much more.

+1 religion and revolution. Hours of fun! One of my top 5 games!

Im dling it right now, but where is the best place to put the mod, mygames or the steam directory?
Tellashim[GIF] Jan 30, 2016 @ 9:23pm
Nvm. Been playing the mod for the past few hours now. It really does change the entire game and its SO much better. More what I was expecting Colonization to be like.

@itchy01ca01 The best place is the game directory. It makes it multiplayer ready.
I can't play it mp and don't know why
