Is there a list of the order in which you should go through the levels?

I've been traipsing around the same handful of bloody levels for over a week trying to find where I'm supposed to go next. Ramses said to go south to Karnak and then go to the Nile, where a powerful weapon awaits, but damned if I can find a new part of any of the levels I've beaten.

Also, why oh why does the game force you to replay levels each time you revisit them?

It's a game design, to revisit maps to accest new areas once you collect Artifact.
It would be kinda boring going back and walking trought empty map.
(and you will most likely run out of ammo, if the ammo don't respawn at the maps...)
