Is the game supposed to lose count of loops?

(NOTE: I am currently in act 4, pls dont spoil anything after or in act 4, thx!)

I noticed this a bit ago, but I thought it was just my Imagination at first, but I paid attention and it turns out that I wasn't Imagining it! I looped back to the king from Dormont, and had to loop back to the king again because I forgot to equip memory of knifekey, and it said I had 68 loops before, then when I looped twice it was saying that I had 74, a full 4 loops more than I had actually done.
Is this an intentional thing, or did I find a bug? Once again, if the answer spoils something later in the game, don't tell me!

It isn't a bug, it's a part of the story. It's mainly just to indicate that Siffrin is losing it mentally at this point in the story. Siffrin's memory issues are getting worse due to their exhaustion, so they are now forgetting entire loops. This is supported by narration that says something like "you can't remember what you were doing last loop" the first time you skip a loop in ACT 3.

You can avoid it by keeping the Memory of Self equipped, if you want to keep your loop count more accurate moving forward.
