In a match itself, I largely think the game is pretty good. Matches, IMO, are mostly limited by player-base size and the catastrophically small number of maps in the larger game modes. Also would like to see player names on units, though.
But outside of the match... well, a lot is lacking.
No ability to change even from the pre-order MP avatar to the basic one. No replays. No in-game tracking of wins/losses. No observer mode. Adding players to a party to queue with feels like 1999 level of efficiency again. No finalized ladder or ranked match system yet, with a need to use an outside website just to find player ranks.
Honestly, a lot of good will could have been won back by promptly adding some of the MP infrastructure that most players take for granted.
And instead? First large update was the store. Which got an immediate hot-fix a day or so later.
Squandered a huge chance, there. And now I even wonder if the player-base for the franchise will just be permanently split between this and CoH2.
What a mess.
i play a lot of skirmish and my absolute favourite thing about coh3 is the tactial pause
omg its so fun
it absolutely needs a coh2 progression system however im only just getting over the shock of it not coming on relese. if it gets coh2s profile customization + a leveling system where every game counts, plus a bunch new free maps, then yeah i dont see a reason to go back to coh2
oh and im sure like a year from now theyll be a soviet dlc too
CoH2 released with way worse problems and even less maps, we just gotta be patient. I bet most of the people complaining never even played CoH 2 at launch.
This isn't totally the case, though.
Yes, THQ going under meant CoH2 had some significant issues at launch. The biggest were that there, too, the number of maps wasn't high... only 2 factions... only 1 campaign.
But it had stats tracking... hell, it had all sorts of achievements for every conceivable thing, from mortaring weapons crews 100 times, to upgrading the scout car to have a 2cm cannon 50 times. It had the ability to change the nameplate, to track MP stats. It launched in a more polished state than CoH3 even despite its own issues.
And every time I hear that RTS is a niche genre, I get that it isn't FPS or Battle-Royale gaming, but to say it's a niche genre is somewhat meaningless... 3-D cartoon Space-Flight Simulators are extremely niche yet Kerbal Space Program is a fantastic game originally designed on a meager budget as well.
At the rate things are going, CoH3 is an excellent tactical experience that probably dies out before long because it can't be bothered to have basic MP features implemented in a timely fashion. People were always going to complain about the cash shop no matter when it appeared, but the fact that that became the first major update over even being able to toggle off my pre-order faceplate or have in-game wins/losses MP counters means the priorities are just all kinds of wrong.
also why arent the players names listed over their units on mouseover? wasnt this a thing in coh2? cant even tell which teammate is which
