Article on the future of Relic games and COH3
Did everybody catch this little nugget about more future DLC coming to coh3 after this one?
What kinda bugged me about the article was that they considered ww2 to be too much of a niche. I guess to "include" everybody you need a fantasy or sci-fi setting.

"The company has just under 100 people now, with most of them in Vancouver, Canada, though there is some hybrid work. There’s no in-office mandate."

Cooked
Based on the Article I hope folks are willing to support the new DLC at around the $25 price.

With no campaign I was thinking more the $20 range, but I personally would shell out the extra 5 to help Relic as they traverse down the new road.

There are several issues I have with CoH 3; mainly balance & Pacing (too fast.)
Overall it's more arcadey & spammy for my taste compared to CoH 2.
I wish they would adjust it to be on par with CoH 2 average match length (about 45 mins to an hour) and just add some options (a faster game mode) for people that want the current average 30-35 min match length.

But the Base / Foundational Game-play is there.
I use "Spearhead 3" and "Realism Game Tuner" and they are a blast together.
I already have over 875 hours in, so ya, I truly enjoy it.

Key Point: If the Formula is not broken don't change it, try to add to it.
DoW 2---> been saying this for years, this should have been "Company of Heroes in Space." CoH 1 is the true successor to DoW 1 spiritually so having gone off course with D2 & D3 was a huge let down felt across the RTS Genre.

DoW 3 still would have been a success IMO if they did the following 3 adjustments:
1) Normal Economy like in DoW 1 (Escalation as a special game mode)
2) All Heroes (1 only) and Elites (more than 1) available for each match
3) All Unit & Tech Upgrades available for each match
e.g. Redux Mod / basically could have been a "40K SC 2" like Experience

----------------------> Relic's Next Game <----------------------
Option 1) Warhammer 40K Company of Heroes / aka- "Company of Heroes in Space"
add in some awesome melee combat with the same awesome CoH Cover system (more 1 or 2 / buildings & cover are really subpar in CoH 3)

Option 2) A brand new WW2 Alternate Universe - Company of Heroes
e.g. The Advanced Powers Mod for CoH 2 / also mechs like in Iron Harvest but with WW2 Tech / some Wolfenstein flavor anyone (zombies) ;) )

Option 3) Modern Day (Broken Arrow tech) or Cold War (WARNO tech) - Company of Heroes

Option 4) A brand new Sci-fi Universe - Company of Heroes
e.g. Crossfire Legion

Option 5) A brand new Alternate Modern Day Universe - Company of Heroes
e.g. Act of War / Act of Aggression

40K is such a rich universe, so it's hard to beat. Thus, I would love a True 40K CoH in Space game. Modern Day Combat would be cool but the WW2 Advanced Powers would be super awesome. / So for me it would be either a 40K or WW2 Advanced Powers Mod Like for my top two Universe Picks.

There are not many dedicated RTS developers out there folks, so please consider supporting Relic so they can deliver hopefully another awesome RTS game down the road.

DOW3 had more problems. For me the main problem was the cartoonish vibe that tried to capture the "wider audience" combined with the complete lack of terrain masking. Their literally was no natural cover. It was all arena style nonsense cover. Dawn of War 1 did it best and for some reason nobody will just recreate it with more units and better mechanics..
COH3 has some cover interpretation problems as well, but it mainly works the way I expect it to, But dow3 literally had people firing through 45 degree hills and tickling enemy soldiers foot undersides.

As for COH3. I agree it is a faster pace. Probably once again because the devs think the modern generations have no attention span or time. Both of which I think are incorrect.

What I love about coh3 is the directional armor, the long ranges for the longer range weapons which gives a stand off that is much more realistic and believeable than the previous game coh2. I love the new theatre and the fact we got until this point to play with the earlier war units and that light vehicles were viable. coh3 has a map editor.... off the bat.
The RTS total war style campaign was a really great idea and I enjoyed it even if it was buggy and a lot of the time non-sensical.
I love that ballistic penetration magnified as a unit gets closer.
I love that unit skins now apply to soldiers as well and love collecting them via the merit system.
I love that coh3 soldier models have individual health bars.
I liked the elevation bonus but that was removed.

So many more things I like over the previous two games. Relic made a real effort to improve this game over the previous two and compared to coh2 I would say it's definitely a better game.

What I did not like was the way it seemingly was forced down consoles throats which really seemed to affect PC game development and probably still plagues the way unit selection and such works today. I also really don't like the icons\badges that are produced to collect, their are literally only a few with any color and the rest are bland non-distinct pictures of wheels and spades. I'd prefer more unit patches like the pre-order devils brigade one.
I really really hate not being able to choose server region as we could in coh2.

P.S. I have 1373hrs in coh3.

Nicely said.

Regarding DoW 3 Cover, for sure a departure from the series...... again.

I say again because with DoW 2 they designed the game around the SP RPG Campaign and threw the Skirmish/MP in at the tale end of the cycle; the Devs even admitted they were not sure how they were going to implement the Skirmish/MP and this was and the end of the development cycle right before the game was set to be released. :steamfacepalm:
---> just in case many in the community do not know, this is why DoW 2 has one building and plays the way it does. It's like a Testing Mode to see how the units would react in a True Skirmish/MP match. LOL

The way I see it..... CoH 1 was the true Spiritual Successor to DoW 1.
The same game Formula but with more advanced mechanics to match the formula.

---> This is why DoW 2 was the biggest let down in RTS History for me.
D2 should have been "Company of Heroes in Space," same Game Formula/Mechanics but with Melee Combat and not the watered down Skirmish/MP experience we got; D2 should have been designed around the Skirmish/MP like in DoW 1 but with the much more Mature Game Formula/Mechanics from CoH 1.

Anyways, just wanted to add a little to the DoW 3 design backed up by Relic's Design Decision History for their games.
DoW 3 still would have been a success IMO if they did the following 3 adjustments:

So less ambitious, moderately priced, and generally agreeable DLC offerings designed to maximize revenue. Meanwhile, the Relic Labs division develops less ambitious, moderately priced, and generally agreeable strategy-adjacent titles design to maximize revenue.

Well, here's to CoH4: XCOM Edition and the Stalingrad Tower Defense DLC. Yaaay...

In theory, it's a smart move since they're currently unable to support an existing modern AAA game at a level it deserves, let alone make a new one.

In reality, well let's just say Relic are not the only gamemakers in town. They're gonna have to compete with micro teams that got a massive advantage in terms of actual experience of making such games and (critically) not having to make the kind of money needed to provide 100 people a fair wage.

Yeah, so palliative care. Realistically, it would be best for the current Relic to support CoH 3 as much as they can, then hand over the game in care of the community and close doors; otherwise they'll probably end up doing it anyway in a few years, so what's the point.

I know I sound pessimistic bordering on toxic right now - but, again, the last "deep dive" video. There were 4 veteran devs sitting there with fancy titles like "lead balance" and "senior designer". And yet all their best effort did amount to is a CoH 1/2 copycat with design decisions ranging from flawed and dubious to ill-conceived and misguided; which is furthermore not what was advertised to us as "heavy tanks battlegroups" and as consequence not what we wanted. This is not my call to make, of course, but I'm not entirely sure as to the rationale behind keeping all these people on payroll.
